Probably, they have been expecting official comments from me for three days now regarding the monetization of Web Optimizer , the new site, and in general, what happens to the most promising web product of this year? And I still can’t break through all these tax, legal entities, business plans, negotiations with partners and investors, sales organization, unit testing and GAE features. But, meet, we have released the next version of Web Optimizer “sailfish” ( speed up to 110 km / h ): bigger, more powerful, more reliable.

What's new

• Separation into paid and free versions . Yes, the most talked about “improvement” :) Let me clarify the situation a bit:
  • The authors finished the development and decided to cut the dough? Far from it. Current monetization is a long and planned step (because we do not have the means to develop the product for several years, as I entered in VKontakte before starting to twist banners) to improve the quality of the product. Look at most of the free, open source utilities: almost all of them are developing (if at all developing) extremely sadly. One new feature can be added for months. We do not want such an outcome, we want to make our product much better than it is now. And do it in a short time. But this requires at least ten times more time than has already been spent on it. And we will invest this time, but without financial support it is impossible to do this. Therefore, we focus on the market and look for support in it.
  • Why are there so few features in the free version? We analyzed thousands of real product installations and selected the most productive parts (on the one hand) and the most difficult to configure and problematic (on the other). Naturally, we left all the first group and put the second into the paid version. The free version is now the best of all its free counterparts (due to the meticulously developed algorithm for combining files, compression logic, caching logic and a set of rules for .htaccess). In fact, we secured most of the users from ourselves and left the maximum acceleration for professionals.
  • More innovations will not be? We have very far-reaching plans to create a comprehensive tool for website acceleration ( some of them have already been announced ): this includes competent server caching processing at all levels, maximum improvement of file processing algorithms, and a set of profile tools ( webo.in functionality ), and a set of tools for "manual" optimization, and the use of the advantages of fast layout , and much, much more. We are not going to stop there, just some foundation was laid for the future productive work.
• Okay, back to the new features. Web Optimizer is now available as a plugin for Wordpress, Joomla! 1.5, Joomla! 1.0. We are working on integration into Drupal and Bitrix. All plugins work in the same way: they wrap Web Optimizer functionality in system calls and interfaces.
• Improved compression. The gzip, x-gzip, deflate, and x-deflate methods are now fully supported. In addition, the correct separation was made at the HTML caching level for all of these types, which significantly increased the reliability of the product.
• Improved caching of static resources. Now CSS and JavaScript files can be written without additional GET parameters (necessary to correctly clear the cache). Thus, the proxy server cache gets clogged faster, and even less traffic leaves the server.
• Many enhancements to CSS Sprites logic. In particular, the algorithm for combining images from SpriteMe is integrated , which led to a smaller size of the final files. The algorithm for translucent images has also been improved for compatibility with weak servers.
• Improved style combining algorithm. Now they “break” (if at all this happens) in units of cases out of tens of thousands.
• Added tab "Server Configuration" (on the main page). Now you can check all the features of the system without additional analysis of the settings and the result of their application.
• Improved accessibility and ease of use of the graphical interface (a large number of small innovations, some of which delivered two sleepless nights in a row).
• Improved "unobtrusive" JavaScript conversion. More counters and ads are now supported.
• The number of opportunities for external integration of Web Optimizer technology has been increased. Now you can simply send the HTML-code for optimization and get the result on the output. More on the Wiki .
• Compatibility with HTML / XHTML / XML documents has been improved (we do not add the former xml:lang, the latter - langand skip the third altogether).
• Added German and Spanish localization, now Web Optimizer is already in five languages, also Russian, English and Ukrainian.

Plans for the near future

The current interface will be uniquely redesigned (it has become obsolete and needs to be drastically replaced, we are thinking about it :), server-level caching has been improved, documentation has been reassembled (otherwise it is now in a somewhat chaotic state), and a debug branch has been compiled (for complete debugging of the application, but sometimes they themselves are not enough). Most likely, a couple of dozen improvements requested by the community.

This is the current distribution situation. It is clearly seen that in September we grew by 60% compared to the previous 6 months. And we are going to maintain such a pace.
