Dwarf fortress
I’ll start my story with such a schedule, which, upon reflection, I can’t even dare to call it comic:

He, as I have seen from my own experience, is fairly fair.
It is supported by one of the mottos of the game - “Losing is fun!” ("Losing is fun.")
Two brothers - Zach Adams (ThreeToe) and Tarn Adams (Toady One) (aka Bay12games) began to develop this game in 2002. In 2006, the first release took place. Now the game is still in the alpha version stage, but, you know, everyone would have alpha versions like this game.
First you will need to create a world in which you place your dwarves. The world is randomly generated, but very seriously - the computer will screen out unsuitable options for life before it creates the right one. Then life will begin on the created territory - rivers and lakes will dry up, new civilizations will appear and old ones will die - all this before the player appears in this world. Later, when we choose a place for our fortress, we will have to pay attention to the neighbors, the climate, the location of rivers and lakes, the height of the mountains, the minerals represented.
When the world is created, we can go explore it by choosing one of the proposed modes: in Dwarf Fortress mode, we have to build and ensure the well-being of the dwarf fortified city. In Adventurer mode, we can go to one of the worlds we created as an adventurer (this mode will remind you of rougelike games). The “Reclaim fortress” section may appear later — so you can bring back the fortress that the villains captured by equipping an expedition of dwarf warriors.
When you try to describe the fortress mode in the game Dwarf Fortress perforce mention games like Dungeon Keeper and Settlers. From the first, first of all, the concept of creating dungeons, rooms. From the second game - the production chain. For example, in order to create a bedroom for your dwarves, you have to send a lumberjack to extract wood, build a carpenter’s workshop, make beds there, dig a bedroom, place beds there and only after that give her the “title” of a place where your dwarves can rest.
Almost all other actions in the game are also neatly interconnected, so get ready to often use the guides and tips. You can find them primarily on the pages of the Dwar Fortress Wiki and on the pages of the Russian version of the dwarfopedia. I confess that when I just started playing I couldn’t even start digging a dungeon. The video tutorials prepared by the Dutch guy, hiding under the nickname captain_duck, helped me a lot. Tell me, have you ever turned to video tutorials to understand a computer game ?:) First of all, they will help you understand the management and interface of the game.
Speaking of the interface! Toady One says, "The interface is coming - it's not coming in your lifetime but it's coming." And I still have not shown you a screenshot of the game. So here's an example for you:
Exactly so, in the best traditions of the (quite) old school, the standard assembly game looks like.
On the left is green grass, in the center the dwarves are smiling with their symbolic faces, and on the right are rocks.
But don't be alarmed - you can make the game a little more attractive visually using all kinds of tilesets.

For example, Mike Mayday Graphics Edition .
Or choose something on this page .
Despite the rustic appearance, the game is quite demanding on resources - initially it takes about 20 megabytes of the game, but then the folder with the game can take up 100, and for someone it can take up to 1000 megabytes. The more dwarves there are, the stronger the load on the processor will be, the game eats RAM also quite willingly. Be prepared for this.
The game is available for users of the operating systems Windows, Linux and Mac OS, so that no one will leave offended.
