How much to ask for a startup?

Against the background of general hysteria about the need to get investments for a startup, I had a question: what exactly does the money go to most startups in the first stage?

Yes, of course, I admit that search engines and mass social networks, like other file hosting services of various kinds, need money for advertising servers + to complete product development.
But how many do they really need?

We all know the story of millions invested in top4top. And personally, I immediately had a question: where exactly? The site does not offer any special know-how, the visits are not so big as to talk about thousands of servers to support its operation. There was advertising on the internet, but I would not say that it’s very expensive and intrusive (that is, inserted everywhere). So where did the money go?

For example, our startup on these pores really would not hurt a little money. But it’s a little. $ 5,000 would be "more than a head" to complete the development (without being distracted by earning money for food) and buy a few servers at the initial stage.

So here is the question that I ask you to answer in the comments: how much money really (I pay attention to this word) does a startup need at startup:
    • Product Development
    • Servers
    • Advertising campaign

The more examples from the experience of real startups you give, the more useful this comment will be.
