The shine and poverty of sysadmins
They are so different, life admin paths.
Preamble.
After all, the stereotypes have already taken shape, from the position of the path traveled, there is a lot to say to the world, about this very world, and where this world should put itself;)
Once you come to the conclusion that you are trying to embrace the incomprehensible, sculpt the shit from the shit and sew beautiful bast shoes, and this is wrong, and what’s the most interesting (fu, what a stamp), nobody says “how to”, or rather, everyone says, they know everything, but, you know, this only suits “them all”.
And there are no good system administrators in the world. As well as there are no good accountants and laptops.
About sysadmins
But the fact is that you will not become a system administrator, or an accountant to whom a monument will be erected, or “they will remember me”, “they will talk about me”, or someone will even tell you about us, we always have the Internet in our office, and Phones work and printers print, and unplanned downtime is extremely rare for more than 15 minutes. Do you think this is all the merit of the system administrator who set up failover switching of Internet channels, delivered competent uninterruptible power supplies, introduced well-updated anti-virus programs (with minimizing traffic, of course), developed a backup policy with a meager budget, took away the rights to install any programs from users ? No, of course, it should have been like that, it is so in itself, and it is strange that it could be somehow different. But it could be. But that would be a different story in another company. The system administrator is a service tool. This is a shovel. If you have a shovel, a curve and dents, you will dig slowly, almost bite the ground with your teeth, or you will dig quickly and efficiently, if you have a good, honed shovel. But the fact is that you will dig with any shovel. In this case, digging is doing business, the goal of which, of course, is making money. A shovel is nothing more than an IT department. whose goal, of course, is to make money. A shovel is nothing more than an IT department. whose goal, of course, is to make money. A shovel is nothing more than an IT department.
All the troubles (if any) of the system administrator is that the IT department is a costly department in any enterprise. We (IT) do not bring money, we select and spend it. Do you like to give or receive money more? Therefore, with a pain in the heart, the director (owner) will sign an account on some server there, the purpose of which he does not really understand. You must understand that improving business performance is also minimizing costs. If the IT manager can convey the idea that “this new server for 5 kilowheels” will minimize the time spent on servicing, say, the sales department, because reports will now be faster, the manager will spend 30 minutes less time per day receiving a report, and salary manager per month divided by the number of days in the month multiplied by the percentage, which is 30 minutes per day from 8 hours of the working day, well, etc. etc.
The salary of the system administrator has a visible limit. The system administrator is a costly employee. But the sales manager is not a costly employee; he just “earns” that same money. If it is good to stimulate a sales manager materially, he will “earn” more money for the company. If it is good to financially stimulate a sysamine, then NOTHING will change, but if you do not, then a good sysadmin will leave. That is why the hellishly good system administrator will NEVER have a higher salary at the same enterprise than a good sales manager. The salary will be exactly what you need to pay so that the system administrator does not leave.
And all this happens against the background of the fact that a typical sysadmin is a very educated, developed and intelligent person, but there is no material happiness in his life, because it can only come about as a result: finding a company when buying a server, finding ordering accessories for an upgrade, sleep $ home, a hard drive for example.
To be a sysadmin is to imagine oneself as the god of computers in the human world. And this is small enough for people, but a lot for computers. And in our era of computers, people are practically moving into the world of computers. The wise sysadmin is a person who managed to move from the world of computers back to the world of people. And then he ceases to be a system administrator, and sits down to weave bast shoes. Or Easter shit, but to do it already for people.
Do I need to be a sysadmin? I think, nevertheless, it is necessary, in order to understand what happiness it is, NOT TO BE A SISADMIN.
