AMD has announced plans for the release of 6 and 12 core processors of the Opteron family
AMD has announced plans to release 6- and 12-core processors from the Opteron family, thus expanding its product line and overshadowing its own plans to produce 8-core processors.

The 12 core processors, codenamed Magny-Cours, will be designed for server platforms and will be released in the first half of 2010, judging by the company's statements. These processors will contain 12MB of cache in the third level and support RAM in the DDR3 format. This processor will include two 6-core processors on the same circuit, which, according to the statements of Mercury Research analyst Dean McCaron, will be simpler and cheaper.

The release of the 6th core processor, codenamed Istanbul, is scheduled for the second half of 2009, right before the release of the 12th core.

AMD also plans to release a 6-core Sao Paolo processor in 2010, which will have a 6MB L3 cache and support DDR3.

Until recently, AMD announced its plans for the release of 8-core processors, code-named - Barcelona, in 2009. The Montreal processor was replaced by the Istanbul processor, and the line was continued with a 12-core model.

New processors will consume less energy due to the fact that they will be produced using 45nm technology, while current Barcelona processors will be produced using 65nm technology.

Such a change in events allows AMD to get around its main competitor - Intel, which in the second half of this year is going to release 6-core Xeon processors, and switch to 8-core models. True, they are unlikely to win the market from Intel, because according to the results for the first half of 2008, Intel occupied almost 80%, namely 78.5% of the market, although AMD's share increased from 18.7% in early 2007 to 20.6% in early 2008.
