MacBook Air Compared to Other Ultraportable Laptops

Apple's new MacBook Air is Apple's first notable initiative in the ultraportable notebook market, clearly distinguished by its light weight and compact size. We decided to compare it with equally worthy computers of this class from Sony, Lenovo, Fujitsu and other manufacturers.

    MacBook Air: slim and light

The computer was quickly introduced in Russia. It is disappointing that it will cost the Russians a thousand dollars more than the Americans. The main advantages of this laptop, which you immediately pay attention to, are its good design and low weight (less than 1.5 kg).

In addition to light weight and "extreme thinness" Apple advertises a few more "chips" of its laptop. Thanks to the enlarged touch panel with advanced features, multi-touch technology allows you to control your computer not only with simple touches, but also with gestures.

The screen size with LED backlighting is 13.3 inches. The image is quite bright and clear.

In addition to the USB 2.0 port and headphone output, the computer has a micro-DVI port, which allows you to get DVI, VGA, composite and S-video outputs using the appropriate adapters.

The amount of memory is 2 GB. The volume of the built-in hard drive is 80 GB. In addition, it is possible to additionally equip a computer with a 64 GB solid-state hard drive (based on flash memory).

An important factor for good performance was the use of 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Moreover, a special processor modification is used that can fit in the small size of the laptop.

A modern mobile computer in the world of multimedia technologies simply cannot do without an integrated webcam. In this case, the iSight camera is used.

Do not forget about the battery life. Apple promises up to 5 hours of productive work without the need to disconnect from wireless networks.

There is no optical drive, but this is not surprising for mobile computers of this class. The laptop has only three connectors - for headphones, USB 2.0 and Mini-DVI. No Ethernet network connector.

Pleasantly surprising is the rather large keyboard, the same as that of other Apple laptops, and a rather large screen size of 13.3 inches, which is a lot for ultra-portable laptops. The screen resolution is also quite decent - 1280x800.

    Fujitsu Q2010 - Close Competitor

Despite the fact that these models have been on the market for several years, they can well compete with the MacBook Air. The Fujitsu laptop is almost as thin as Apple’s new product, but has a smaller display - 12.1 inches.

Q2010 has an integrated wireless Wi-Fi 802.11abg interface, Bluetooth 2.0 and a sufficient number of ports and connectors. At the same time, it is also lighter than the MacBook Air - it weighs only 1 kg. The laptop comes in two versions - with a hard drive capacity of 40 GB or 80 GB.

    Lenovo Thinkpad X61 - today's champion

X61 has become one of the most popular ultraportable corporate laptops and deservedly is the leader in ratings of many publications. This is a fast laptop with long battery life.

This computer is slightly heavier than the MacBook Air and the competitor from Fujitsu we have reviewed is 1.63 kg. But it has the highest performance. Lenovo laptop traditionally has a comfortable keyboard and a reasonable price when using Intel Santa Rosa processors. It is worth adding that the screen size of the Thinkpad X61 is slightly smaller than that of Air - 12.1 inches.

    Sony VGN-TZ150N / B - a worthy rival in design

This ultraportable can compete with the MacBook Air in the field of design. VGN-TZ150N / B has a stylish glossy keyboard that resembles the keys of a piano, weighs only 1.22 kg. The 11.1-inch LED-backlit screen features high brightness. And the resolution 1366x768 makes all the details of the image very clear, which allows not only comfortable viewing photos, but also clearly see even the smallest text.

The keys are slightly elevated above the plane of the keyboard, which may be more convenient when printing with a blind method. Another feature of the laptop - two separate slots for memory cards SD and Memory Stick, allowing you to work with them at the same time.
