Blu-ray twice as popular as HD DVD

It seems that a noticeable reduction in the cost of HD DVD players, a wide range of appropriate discs, as well as quite reasonable prices for these are not a guarantee of victory in the format war. In any case, statistics indicate that so far the most popular Blu-ray discs.

According to the calculations of specialists from the American company Home Media Research, in the first half of this year, about 1.6 million Blu-ray films were sold in the United States, while only 795 thousand, that is, half as much, were sold to HD DVD discs. Interestingly, this situation is adequately illustrated by the sale of the film “300 Spartans” by Zach Snyder. The fact is that in the United States this film was released in both formats, and the HD DVD version instantly became the best-selling HD DVD movie. However, this did not prevent the Blu-ray version from becoming almost twice as popular.

It is difficult to clearly state the reasons for the current situation. On the one hand, the noticeable influence of Sony and its Playstation 3 game console is obvious. On the other hand, Toshiba now and then declares that household HD DVD players are selling much better than BD players. In any case, it’s worth waiting at least another year or two, after which it will be possible to draw some definite conclusions.
