An archive of works by Leonardo da Vinci will appear on the Internet

Soon, thousands of drawings and drawings by Leonardo da Vinci will appear on the Internet. The European Union is financing the Leonardo Digitale website, which will host graphic works by the great artist, according to the newspaper Telegraph.

While the site is under construction. Prior to its opening, most of the drawings and illustrations for da Vinci’s inventions could only be seen by specialists with access to the archives. But the Leonardo National Museum in his hometown promised to prepare and scan about 12 thousand pages of his work and create a digital archive.

Currently, about a quarter of documents are ready for publication on the Internet. “We are still at the very beginning of the journey, but we hope to collect and present many more drawings,” says Romano Nanni, director of the Leonardo Library.

Da Vinci's drawings and drawings demonstrate a huge range of talents and interests of the artist. They affect geometry, astronomy, botany, zoology, the art of warfare and bird flight techniques.

Most of the artist's graphic works are stored in ten European collections. Most of them after the death of da Vinci in 1519 were in Italy. But later the archive was again fragmented. A significant part of it fell in the 19th century to Napoleon. One of the collections of manuscripts, the Leicester Codex, was purchased in 1994 by Bill Gates for $ 30.8 million. She became the most expensive book in the world.

When deciphering manuscripts by Leonardo, scientists encounter some difficulties. Firstly, all texts are written in mirror image. Researchers attribute this to the fact that da Vinci was left-handed, and since he wrote with goose feathers in those days, he wrote in the opposite direction so as not to smear what was written. Secondly, a lot of documents are mixed with different meanings: technical instructions are often adjacent to the shopping list.

In the near future, the archive of Leonardo Da Vinci will appear on the Internet in Italian, the English section is expected in about two months.
