AMD Quad Core Tests
AMD recently published tests of its new quad-core processors, code-named Barcelona. Tests were carried out in the SPEC CPU2006 package. The 2.6 GHz AMD Opteron Barcelona processor was 21% faster in SPECint_rate2006 and almost 50% in SPECfp_rate2006 than its closest competitor Intel Xeon 5355 2.66 GHz.
An attentive reader, most likely already noticed that AMD can be convicted of a certain inadequacy. The fact is that not the flagship Intel Xeon X5365 with a frequency of 3.0 GHz was chosen as the opposition to Barcelona, but only the X5355. On the other hand, AMD currently does not have a 2.6 GHz processor ready to enter the market. Only models with a frequency of 2.0 GHz are on the way.
It’s clear that such testing is just a marketing move on the part of AMD. But it also to some extent fuels interest in the ongoing rivalry of the "silicon" giants. And what will be the real performance of the Barcelona chips, which will appear on the market in the near future, will show the tests of independent laboratories.
