Panasonic: first 144-Mbps Blu-ray discs

The Japanese company Matsushita Electric Industrial, whose products are better known under the Panasonic brand name, has officially unveiled its new development: 25 and 50-gigabyte Write-Once Blu-Ray Disc (BD-R) media with support for four times the recording speed.

The 4x recording speed index in this case corresponds to the transfer of 144 Mbps of information per second. In theory, in one minute on the BD-R you can record more than 1 GB of data. According to the company, all new media will use phase-change recording technology.

Panasonic introduced two modifications of the BD-R 4x. This is the LM-BR25LD - a single-layer drive with a capacity of 25 GB and a double-layer LM-BR50LD with a capacity of 50 GB. According to unofficial data, the price of new products will be $ 10 and $ 30, respectively. The exact time to market the disks is not yet known. However, according to some reports, in Japan, the BD-R 4x should appear in late July (LM-BR25LD) and in late September (LM-BR50LD). The output of the first 25-gigabyte drive should coincide with the appearance on the market of Panasonic's 4-speed Blu-ray player.
