Virtual travel: photo-cartographic-mashups

In summer, most people are in one of three states: planning a vacation, on vacation, or returning from vacation. There are truths to those who only have to dream about vacation. However, for all categories, the idea of combining maps from Google or Yahoo with photo sites is uniquely useful, linking each picture to the place where it was taken - those who are going on a trip can find their place in advance, those who return will be able to make a photo route of their trip, and those anyone who wants to get somewhere: see photos of the coveted place. Below we will talk about the most popular mashups in this area.

The advantage of flickr is a huge user base and photo, so the Explore-> World Map section, which is not particularly widely advertised, contains a huge number of photos attached to specific points. Maps are used, of course, from Yahoo, but this does not detract from the value of this service. Among the photographs there are a lot of pictures like “I am in the background ...”, but the impression of some place is perhaps the most complete. The uniqueness of this service is in addition to maps and photographs also videos and texts describing a particular place. We can say that this is a mashup of 5 services at once: Google Maps, Flickr, Youtube, Wikimapia and Placeopedia. The last 2 are responsible for a bunch of maps with articles from Wikipedia.

There are a lot of videos, even from less popular places, but sometimes the texts are not enough, however, it allows you to make a complete impression of the city or region.

    Panoramio

Panoramio, whose views of American cities were integrated into Goggle Maps as Streets View last week, has a large database of photographs from around the world. Basically, these are specific photos from art and tourist albums, which do not give a real idea, but strict filtering and geo-referencing to geographical places and buildings leaves almost no room for typical tourist photos, which have already been discussed above.

Pixagogo would be no different from other services if it were not for the focus on creating custom albums. If you decide to structure your pictures after the trip and present them to relatives and friends in a pretty way, then this service is just for you. However, for the opening of new places it does not fit very well. Yes, and the interface leaves much to be desired.
