Seven Tips After Installing Ubuntu 7.04

I’ll make a reservation right away, I already downloaded my Valiant Deer, but I haven’t written a blank yet, and I haven’t tried to put it. Lying while the torrent on the distribution. And this is a brief translation of Matthew Newton’s advice from PC World: what to do with ubuntu if you had Windows installed an hour ago. Since I have debian, and I still have no opportunity to see exactly what is called in Ubuntu 7.04, I leave the names of the menu items in English for now. I humbly ask you to forgive me for this :) So, Matthew's advice:

    1. Repair the ALT button

By default, it works as a layout modifier. Change in System - Preferences - Keyboard. ALT-F2 can be used to run programs.

    2. Correct the screen resolution.

In general, System - Preferences - Screen Resolution.

(Interestingly, Feisty Fawn can detect wide screens?

    Let's see ...) 3. Install Automatix

The easiest way to get the opportunity to watch DVDs and perform other, forbidden, but enjoyable actions. Automatics take here . For example, for i386 here is this installation package . Run Automatics from Applications - System tools - Automatix.

    4. Make sure all your media files are playing.

Files to look for in Places. There is also a link to the Windows section, where they most likely are ...

If something does not play, launch Automatix, install the AUD-DVD Codecs (in this case, the function of automatically downloading codecs will be disabled, but this step is only necessary if something does not play, it should be played right away). Next, run Synaptics and install totem-xine.

    5. Try to play with graphic effects.

The function is experimental, it doesn’t work for everyone, but if it works, it will be pleasant for you, and if it will be pleasant for you ... you know later :)

To enable it, go to System - Preferences - Desktop effects. Turn on the driver (Enable driver) [here you have to reboot]. Again there, turn on the effects themselves - Enable Desktop Effects. If the flight is normal, save the settings (Keep settings).

Try switching between desktops (toggle buttons from bottom right). Like? Try pressing ALT-TAB to switch between windows.

[Curiously, does the mouse in the upper right corner in Ubuntu 7.04 work as usual in compiz?]

    6. You can make even more effects!

In general, I omit the installation instructions for beryl instead of compiz in the translation, see the original :)

    7. Learn how to install and remove software

Installing and uninstalling programs on Linux is much easier than on Windows. This is done in the package manager. So, two ways.

First, the easiest. Applications - Add / Remove. And choose what your heart desires. The choice is wide, and often the quality is on top.

Well, if you want more features, you can use the Synaptics package manager. System - Administration - Synaptics Package Manager. It is convenient here to search for new and unknown programs.

You can write an entire article about how many great programs are on Linux, but are not installed by default on Ubuntu. However, in the end of this article I will notice that if you installed Ubuntu, and your WiFi card was not detected or is not supported, install the Ndisgtk package. Then select the menu System - Administration - Windows Wireless Drivers, and specify the Ubuntu driver of your WiFi-card, designed for Windows (probably it is on the disk that came with the card and is a file with the extension .INF). Most likely your WiFi card will work after that.
