Thunderbird 2.0 will be released in late April

At the end of this week, Thunderbird 2.0 Release Candidate will be released - that is, the latest interim version before the release, which is scheduled for the end of April. Thunderbird is an open source desktop email client from Mozilla. Thunderbird is taking over more and more web functionality from Firefox. Thunderbird is a cross-platform client that runs on MacOS X, Linux, Windows (in the new version with Vista support). The first release took place in the spring of 2003 and since then the program has been used by 10 million people.

The main changes in the new version are message tagging (like topics on Habré), new integration with GMail and Apple .mac, new options for viewing and warning about new messages.

    New opportunities

The new version of Thunderbird is designed to protect users from information overload. For this purpose, the client acquired more flexibility (support for add-ons, as in Firefox), and security was also enhanced. The following mail organization enhancements were introduced: Message tagging and improved search Advanced message viewing capabilities New message alert Integration with GMail and .Mac
    Now, first things first :)

Tagging allows you to add as many tags to your message as you see fit. In the future, this will help you save a couple of minutes in finding the right letter.

Advanced message viewing options allow you to display only the directories you need. Thus, you can choose the function of displaying folders with unread messages.

There are also navigation keys (as in browsers) that allow you to view the message history. That is, it will be possible to scroll through the message chain, as done in GMail, in chronological order. Now it will be possible to read the ordered comments on Habré! :)

When you receive each new letter, a warning message about new messages will appear. However, the function can be disabled if it bothers you. Unfortunately, the “warning” does not have flexible settings now, that is, you cannot set a filter that displays a “warning” about new messages only from a number of contacts, and not from all.

A search in the new version displays the results as you type, as is done in Google Suggest. By the way, the search takes place in correspondence, rss feeds, news ... And you can save search queries.

The integration of Thunderbird 2 with Gmail and .Mac is that there is no need to configure POP and SMTP servers. Soon there will be support for other mail services.

Thunderbird 2's greatest strength is extensibility. Like Firefox, Thunderbird is an open source product that allows third-party developers to create their own extensions. Already, there are hundreds of extensions, including contact managers, VoIP phones, various network tools.
