There are more mobile phones in Europe than people

The number of contracts concluded between mobile operators and residents of EU countries for the first time exceeded the number of residents themselves - by as much as 3%.

Of course, the authors of the original article did not knowingly mention “dead souls” and tried to equalize the number of mobile phones and the number of contracts, but nevertheless the figure is more than impressive.

In 2005, the number of contracts was 5% less than the number of citizens of countries belonging to the European Union.

True, the "penetration rate" of cellular communications varies significantly in different countries. For example, in Luxembourg it is 171%, in Italy - 134%, in Lithuania - 133%. This indicator is the lowest in Slovakia (86%), France (82%) and Malta (83%).
