Traffic police are going to equip computer systems with a Russian processor
In a short time, traffic police units and public service delivery points are going to be equipped with computer systems that operate on the basis of the Baikal processor. It is also planned to implement a simultaneous transition to a Russian protected operating system, writes TASS.
"In addition to the installed servers with Elbrus processors , the traffic police units and public services will be equipped with workstations built on the Russian Baikal processor this year, with a simultaneous transition to a domestic protected operating system," the department said. According to representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the transition to domestic software is carried out according to plan, in accordance with the instructions of the country's leadership.
“In accordance with the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia is making a transition to domestic hardware and software on a scheduled basis,” the press center said. The ministry also clarified that we are talking about workstations, they will be equipped with “Baikal”. But servers on the basis of another domestic development, Elbrus processor, are already successfully used in traffic police units.
"Baikal" - a Russian processor, which was developed by the domestic company Baikal Electronics. It is possible that the acceleration of the transition to Russian electronic systems occurred under the influence of a mass attack from the malware WannaCry, which in the first days after its appearance infected hundreds of thousands of computers. I was struck by this virus and computer systems in state institutions, which, at times, led to the partial or complete shutdown of various services. For example, in some regions of the country the issuance of driver's licenses was suspended.
As far as we know , the malware hit, first of all, a system with installed Windows 7 without updates from Microsoft, as well as a system where the vulnerability in the SMB protocol implementation is not closed.

. Baikal-T1 processor performance is comparablewith Intel Atom processor performance. Initially, it was planned to be used in powerful telecommunications equipment, such as routers and thin clients. At the beginning of last year, the Russian company T-Platform began the production of Tavolga monoblocks Terminal TP-T22BT based on this processor.
