Samsung has applied for patent smart contact lenses

Samsung has developed the concept of smart contact lenses with integrated display and camera. The patent describes in detail how such a device can be used to create augmented reality. It will be powered by a wireless connection to the user's smartphone and include a built-in motion sensor for controlling by blinking. The patent refers to Google Glass with the proviso that such external displays offer poor viewing angles and image quality. These problems can be solved by placing a tiny OLED display between layers of soft contact lenses, according to theverge .

Researchers have created a prototype of contact lenses with embedded displays before, but they are usually quite rudimentary, with a limited number of pixels and minimal testing in real life. The development of Google's smart contact lenses , which analyze blood glucose levels to help people with diabetes, was announced two years ago, but tests are still ongoing.

Samsung's patent looks believable, but in fact it is difficult to implement. It is also worth emphasizing that this is most likely just a patent application filed back in 2014 and still marked in the South Korean intellectual property database as “new research” with a “not explored” mark. Nevertheless, it shows that Samsung, at least, works in this direction and generates ideas, even if their implementation may take years.
