XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms Released

Last week at the Xamarin Developer Summit, we announced the XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms, which allows you to make changes to the XAML user interface and view them in real time, without requiring another build and deployment.

XAML hot reload for Xamarin.Forms speeds up development and simplifies assembly, experimentation and iteration in the user interface. This means that you no longer need to rebuild your application every time you configure your user interface - all changes are instantly displayed in the running application.

When your application is compiled using XAML Hot Reload, it works with all libraries and third-party controls. This feature will be available for iOS and Android in Visual Studio 2019 and Visual Studio 2019 for Mac. Everything works on all valid deployment goals, including simulators, emulators, and physical devices.

XAML's hot reboot will be available later in 2019, but you can register to participate in preview:

What is supported?

XAML hot reboot for Xamarin.Forms connects to an existing workflow to save you time and increase productivity. Today, when you want to make changes to your XAML, you must build, deploy, and debug again. Now just save the XAML file and see how the changes are reflected in real time to the deployment target, which allows you to spend less time creating and deploying and more time creating mobile applications.

You do not need to do anything special to use Hot Reload; there are no additional packages or code. Build and deploy the application, as usual in Visual Studio or Visual Studio for Mac, on an iOS, Android emulator, simulator, or physical device. Because XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms uses a debugger rather than a network connection, it works reliably in complex corporate networks or in non-connected environments. Edit your XAML and click "Save." After rebooting, your navigation status will be saved. If you use the MVVM template, the UI state that is bound to your view model will remain unchanged upon reboots.

This new product also supports updates to all valid XAML types, including pages, Application, and Shell. If you edit MyControl.xaml and save it, all pages that link to this control will be automatically updated according to your changes.

XAML hot boot is resistant to typos and unsupported changes, such as IntelliSense fast actions. Before reloading your changes, Visual Studio ensures that the changes you make are valid. If your edits contain invalid changes, that change will not be applied in your application, and the XAML editor will display the curves so that you know about it. You can also check to see if the reboot went through the Output window in Visual Studio.

It is important for us that the XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms works with all types of applications, regardless of complexity. We have established partnerships with control providers and open source project developers such as Telerik, Infragistics, Grial UI Kit, Prism and Syncfusion so that you don’t have problems using XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms when working with these projects .

We focus on reviews

We conducted over 50 tests of various concepts with the developers at XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms to ensure that the concept will make your internal development cycle more productive. We have also partnered with several major Xamarin clients, Visual Studio partners and Xamarin MVP partners to ensure that this experience meets your expectations. Finally, we invited developers to our Seattle User Experience lab to use the XAML Hot Reload for Xamarin.Forms and verify that the experience was intuitive for all developers.

What's next?

At the private preview stage, we will continue to work on the XAML Hot Reboot to ensure that it meets your needs and exceeds the expectations you set for elements such as quality and performance. When you let us know that it is ready, it will be built into a future release of Visual Studio and Visual Studio for Mac.

In addition to achieving quality and productivity goals, the following items are also included in the XAML Hot Reload Roadmap:

  • Incremental reload: reload only controls or properties that have changed
  • Concurrent reboots: Reboot XAML for multiple debugged platforms simultaneously
  • Improved status monitoring: Improved UX for displaying “coarse” edits or edits containing invalid changes to reload
  • CSS: CSS style updates will be applied on reload

XAML is just the beginning of a Xamarin hot reboot. We will continue to focus our roadmap on the items that you think are most important to you. In addition to focusing on XAML, we continue to explore additional ways to increase your productivity when working in Visual Studio.
