Which of the developers living in the same city earns more: working remotely or in the office?
At the end of 2018, we tried to check the widespread idea that in IT the salary of a remote employee is lower on average than that of an office worker. And they saw that if we take all the salaries of Russian IT specialists, then the remote employees on average earn 40% more than office workers .
Looking in more detail, we found that the salaries of remote IT workers are higher than the salaries of office workers only in the regions, but lower than the office salaries of St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Today we decided to dig even deeper and compare the salaries of remote and office employees living in the same city. So far, limited to the field of software development and cities with millionaires.

So, which of the developers living in the same city earns more: working remotely or in the office?
As soon as we built a diagram of remote and office salaries for developers living in the same cities, several interesting discoveries were waiting for us:
- Salaries of remote developers in different cities differ as much as office salaries.
- The salary level of remote developers is poorly related to the salary level of office developers in the same city.
- In all cities, with the exception of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the salaries of remote developers are higher than the salaries of office developers.
- The highest salaries are for remote developers living in Novosibirsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Kazan.
- Novosibirsk remoters bypassed Moscow remoters, and remoters of all the above five cities bypassed St. Petersburg not only by remote, but even by office work.
It turns out that in all cities, except Moscow and St. Petersburg, it is more profitable to work remotely, but where is this benefit most noticeable?
- In Volgograd, the salary of remote developers is 2 times higher than the salaries of office developers, in Krasnoyarsk - 1.9 times.
- In Krasnodar, Ufa, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kazan, Voronezh and Yekaterinburg - 1.6 - 1.7 times more.
- In Perm, Chelyabinsk, Samara and Nizhny Novgorod - 1.4 - 1.5 times more.
- In Rostov-on-Don, the salary of remote developers is less than the salary of office developers - 1.25 times.
- In Moscow and St. Petersburg, working remotely is less profitable than in the office.
In conclusion, let’s look at the salaries of office and remote employees in the box plot diagrams (“mustache box”). We made all our observations based on these data.
Dots indicate specific salaries. The middle vertical line shows the median salary (half of the salaries are lower and half above this point, we can consider this average salary), the box borders are 25 and 75 percentiles (divide the lower and upper half of the salaries again in half, as a result, half of all salaries are between them). The box mustache is 10 and 90 percentiles (conditionally we can consider them the minimum and maximum salaries).
