Update Update 4 for Veeam Cloud Connect

The new year began with new products from Veeam. Last week, Service Providers became available Update 4 for Veeam Cloud Connect. Let me remind you that Veeam Cloud Connect helps to set up virtual machine replication, launch replicas in the service provider cloud, and organize a remote repository for backups on the provider's site. I already wrote about this tool here . Today I will show that a new one has appeared in it.

    Here are the main changes:

    • Cloud Gateway binding to specific customers;
    • replication to the VMware vCloud Director organization. Previously, you could only make replicas at the vCenter level. Clients did not have the ability to connect to the replica of the virtual machine through the console, without failover.
    • backup to tape with client binding to a specific tape.

    Details under the cut.

    Cloud Gateway Pool

Now the client can be assigned separate cloud gateway pools (Cloud Gateway Pool). If the client has specific channel requirements for replication tasks (for example, channel encryption according to GOST or guaranteed speed), this can be organized in the new Veeam Cloud Connect. To do this, create a client-specific Cloud Gateway Pool. There may be several - for fault tolerance or load balancing. I will show the example of one.

Next we create the Gateway Pool and add the required Cloud Gateway to it.

When the gateway pool is created, assign it to the appropriate client. There is a failover option to other Cloud Gateways if something happens to the allocated pool.

    Replication in vCloud Director

Now you can configure virtual machine replication not just to the VMware infrastructure of the cloud provider, but to the selected vCloud Director organization. Versions 8.10, 8.20, 9.0, 9.0.0.1, 9.0.0.2, and 9.1 are supported. Remember that the Hardware Version of the replicated virtual machine should be no higher than that of the provider. Here is how it will look in practice.

In Cloud Connect, create a client profile based on the account in vCloud Director.

Select the organization where the replicas will be added.

We select Gateway Pool for this client.

In the Replica Resources tab, we see the selected organization in the cloud. Click Apply, and the client can connect to Cloud Connect.

For network connectivity between resources in the service provider cloud and its infrastructure, it is proposed to use Veeam Network Extension. With it, you can do partial (restore individual machines from replicas) and complete failover (restore the entire site). You can use NSX Edge functionality for these purposes. It is much more convenient.

Now let's see how client replication setup looks like.

To connect to Cloud Connect in the console, Veeam Backup and Replication, the client selects a service provider.

The client is authorized in Cloud Connect using the vCloud Director account, into which replicas will be added later.

After authorization, the client sees the resources allocated for the replica: the name of the organization, CPU, Memory, Storage, etc.).

Then you can start creating tasks for replication. Here everything is as in previous versions, up to the Destination tab.

On the Destination tab, the client selects the vApp to which the virtual machine is going to replicate, and the Storage policy.

Further, the task is configured as in the previous version. It looks like a finished task for replication.

And these are ready-made replicas in the service provider cloud.

All replicas can be accessed through the vCloud Director control panel. Any virtual machine can be turned on / off, potestit, clone, and everything that can be done with normal virtual machines. If the topic is interesting, in the next post I can tell you more about setting up this whole thing.

    Write backup to tape

With Update 4, the ability to assign specific tapes to a specific client has been added. Previously, you had to poke around in the repository in order to understand what and where it lies. This is more of a convenience store for the provider.

Update 4 will be open to the public on January 22. In the CloudLine cloud, you can take a test pool of resources to try out the new features of Veeam Cloud Connect.
