IBM Watson Health has announced plans to acquire Truven Health Analytics, a leading cloud provider of healthcare data and analytics, for $ 2.6 billion. Truven services are used by over 8,500 organizations, including US federal and regional government agencies. The integration will integrate employers and health insurance programs, hospitals and medical personnel, as well as biotechnology companies on the IBM Watson Health Cloud platform.

Upon completion of the transaction, the IBM cloud healthcare platform will become one of the largest healthcare information repositories, representing a collection of life data of about 300 million patients from three previously acquired companies. IBM plans to integrate Truven's cloud data array into its platform, which covers information on hundreds of different types of medical costs and reports, quality of care and treatment outcomes.

Using the Watson Health Cloud, medical organizations can take advantage of previously disparate data sets, including a huge amount of unstructured information, and combine them to get a complete picture of the factors for making the right and informed health decisions.

Since the founding of Watson Health in April 2015, Truven Health Analytics is IBM's fourth significant healthcare acquisition. After the transaction is completed, IBM intends to invest more than $ 4 billion in the development of analytical technologies in the medical field. They will allow professionals to increase the effectiveness of treatment of diseases, control costs and develop solutions with an emphasis on the quality of medical services provided.

After the transaction is completed, the staffing potential of IBM Watson Health will increase to 5 thousand employees, including hundreds of medical consultants, epidemiologists, statisticians, policy experts, as well as administrators and health consultants who will join the IBM business division. Truven's cloud technology, methodology and health insurance data will also be part of Watson Health Cloud.

“With this acquisition, IBM will become one of the global leaders in data processing for health insurance and analytics and the only company to provide the unique cognitive capabilities of the Watson platform,” said Debora DiSanzo, chief executive of IBM Watson Health. “The excellent Truven team, an impressive customer list and an extensive database will complement Watson Health’s versatile staff, technical capabilities and service portfolios.” Together, we will be able to reach the world level and develop first-class solutions that will allow our customers to use cognitive computing in order to provide the most cost-effective medical care. "

It is expected that the transaction will be closed later this year after the conditions for completion of the transaction are met and in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
