The iconic Winamp player again has a chance to revive

The fate of the Winamp player is full of unexpected twists. The Vivendi SARL group of companies announced the acquisition of a 64% stake in Radionomy, which currently owns all rights to the once-most popular media player. Although direct announcements of the resumption of development have not been made, Vivendi indicates that Winamp and SHOUTcast have become one of their most significant assets. Winamp was

originally developed by Nullsoft in 1997. The creators of the program are Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev. In 1999, Nullsoft was acquired by AOL LLC. In 2004, the latest Nullsoft employees at the forefront of Winamp development left AOL LLC. At the end of 2009, 70 million users used Winamp. At the end of 2013

AOL announced that it was abandoning the Winamp project and its further development. after that, in January 2014, the Belgian Internet radio broadcasting company Radionomy Group announced the purchase of a player from Winamp AOL Corporation. In addition to Winamp, Radionomy also acquired the SHOUTcast catalog of radio stations.

Unfortunately, with fanfare announcing the purchase and intentions to continue development, Radionomy did not fulfill its promises, and no progress has been made in development since then. The latest released version of the player remains v5.666 .

The Winamp program is made high enough to still work, including on the latest versions of Windows. And although now there are quite a few “live” alternatives, in the event of a real restart and continued development of the player, it will be able to win a significant part of the audience.

Perhaps we still have the opportunity to see how the llama is being pulled up by a shaggy ass.
