Scientists discuss how to survive in the world of Fallout 4

October 23, 2077. After the start of nuclear bombing of the territory, civilians are trying to escape in the shelters of the Walt Tech Corporation, built throughout America. In them, humanity will have to survive the next couple of centuries.
People equip the territory, collect materials in the district, build fortifications, turrets, make personal weapons, sew uniforms. It is necessary to protect the home from raiders and mutants who were exposed to radiation infection.
Scientists from the American Chemical Society tried to assess the characteristics of the Volt-Tech shelter and understand how long a person is able to live in a nuclear apocalypse. This is the theme of the video published as part of the popular science series Reactions.
Scientists explain that surviving the nuclear bombing itself and radiation contamination is not a particular problem if there is shelter nearby. To protect yourself from radiation, you need to consider three factors: the distance to a nuclear explosion, time and the characteristics of the bunker.
If you managed to survive the first minutes and you pre-paid the stay of the Walt-Tech Corporation, then everything is fine. In the game world there is shelter number 13, there are some characteristics of the bunker: the depth of placement is 61 meters underground, the thickness of the steel door is 3.5 meters. Apparently, steel on the walls and ceiling is the same thickness. It is enough to protect against radiation.
The problem may be the energy supply of the shelter in the coming centuries, scientists argue, since installing solar panels on the surface will be problematic due to mutants. In this sense, shelter No. 8, which is supplied with nuclear energy, and shelter No. 13 at a geothermal source, look promising.

Survivors can also use fuel cells to generate electricity, heat and water, the authors of the video advise.

To protect against ionizing radiation on the surface, it is proposed to adapt existing NASA space suits and nanomaterials.
There is an even bigger problem with food, but here you can find a way out, scientists say: there are ways to grow edible plants and animals without using soil. You can raise fish and use aquaponics for growing vegetables in a closed cycle.
Water will have to be cleaned of radiation. One option is to use graphene oxide. Two years ago, scientists from Moscow State University and Rice University (USA) discovered the ability of graphene to extract radioactive materials from aqueous solutions at high speed.
In general, if you prepare in advance and bring to mind the necessary technologies, then part of humanity will be able to survive after the nuclear apocalypse.
PS Given the recent events in the world, the development of new types of nuclear weapons and cobalt bombs , the Fallout 4 universe can materialize in reality much earlier than the developers of the game expected.
