DJI Osmo - Pocket Stabilizer

We are surprised that no one on Geektimes has yet written about this piece of iron.

DJI is known to many of you as a manufacturer of quadrocopters - about Phantom models (we already wrote about Pro and Standard versions), Inspire and S1000 were not heard only by someone who is not interested in “flying”. Well, I want to subjectively call devices “ideal”, however, it’s worth recognizing that “out of the box” these are really some of the most successful devices - stylish, functional, high-quality. A kind of Apple among manufacturers of quadrocopters. But today is not about that. Unexpectedly for everyone, the company released DJI Osmo - a “walking” version of the stabilizer for the Action camera.

The camera modules in modern smartphones have reached the level where users realized that they, as such, no longer really need a camera - what to take a photo, what to record video. To confirm these words, just watch a video where an enthusiast compares the recording quality of 4K video on the iPhone 6S and the professional Nikon D750 “DSLR” :

If this is the situation with a professional camera, then it is hardly appropriate to compare the quality of video recording with more budget cameras. However, it’s not enough just to take the camera in your hands and press the button - to shoot a video, which then will not be ashamed to upload to YouTube and show your friends, you need direct hands. Either the video is vertical, then it is dark, then stabilization is not enough, then the phone slipped out of my hand.

Apparently, to solve all these problems, DJI decided to release a new product - a camera with a stabilizer that will allow you to shoot video of cinematic quality. Please note that this is not a stabilizer for your smartphone, namely a camera, but this does not hinder the trend of ubiquitous video shooting. As you already understood, this time we are talking about a portable device, and not about the giant electronic stabilizer Ronin .

The design of the device weighs only 200 grams and is a pen (with controls and a microphone for recording sound, external microphones are supported), a holder, a three-axis stabilizer-suspension and the camera itself. All this allows you to make incredibly smooth shooting in any conditions, including long-exposure photographs without a tripod.

As a camera, DJI Osmo uses the Zenmuse X3 (as in Inspire 1), which is equipped with a Sony Exmor R CMOS (1 / 2.3 ") matrix and is capable of recording video in 4K resolution (at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second) and FullHD (up to 120 frames per second), as well as take photos with a resolution of 12 megapixels (in Adobe DNG RAW format) .However, the device’s suspension is compatible with the new cameras of the Zenmuse X5 series with Micro 4/3 matrices.

Of interesting features is the automatic panorama mode, in which the camera will rotate and take pictures on its own.A complete list of characteristics and visual instructions for the device .

The device holder allows you to install a smartphone to control the settings and the process of shooting from the screen, in the arsenal - the presence of a Wi-Fi module for the DJI GO application .

It’s too early to talk about the fight against the greatness of GoPro’s Action cameras, but for now, one thing is clear: users will like the stabilized image much more, so if GoPro doesn’t solve the issue of hardware stabilization in the near future, it will definitely have to move forward soon. And considering that it is unlikely that hardware stabilization (but not software stabilization, like in Sony) can be done in a compact HERO package, the prospects for Osmo seem rather bright.

The price of the novelty is $ 649 - sales will begin on October 15, although now you can use the pre-order. Like other DJI products , the Osmo stabilizer is likely to appear on the shelves of our stores in the foreseeable future.
