Ex-CEO of Bitcoin exchange MtGox officially accused of embezzlement of customers

In August this year, Mark Karpls, the ex-CEO of the MtGox Bitcoin exchange, was arrested by the Japanese authorities. Now he has been officially charged with embezzlement of funds placed on his stock exchange. The total amount of stolen funds, according to the police, is $ 2.67 million.

The representative of the Japanese police said that the former head of the exchange spent the stolen funds on the purchase of various things (for example, a custom-made bed) and licensed software.

Let me remind you that the exchange was launched in July 2010, and after some time Mt.Gox became the largest Bitcoin resource. Karplz then stated that hackers had hacked into the exchange and stole about $ 460 million from bitcoin wallets, and another $ 27.4 from the company's accounts.

The company launched a bankruptcy protection procedure in February 2014, after a statement of the loss of $ 450 million (equivalent to Bitcoin) from its wallets. Then Karpls went to court to begin debt restructuring in bankruptcy protection. This gave temporary immunity from claims of creditors, and the ability to maintain company management. The next step is the assessment of all your assets and debts, as well as an explanation of possible further actions. All this information is publicly available.

Later, the company "discovered" $ 100 million (in the equivalent of bitcoins) on one of the wallets, but everything else was gone, it seems, irrevocably. Now the exchange is approximately in the middle of the liquidation process.
