Two plastic palettes for children in joy

A 3D pen is such a hand-made artistic version of a 3D printer and works with the same consumable - filament. This is a wire molded plastic, and it comes in two main types - PLA and Watson. The Dadget company offers both options, conveniently assembled in multi-colored palettes, from where it is convenient to feed them into the pen itself.

PLA is called PLA plastic, and this type of ABS is called WATSON plastic, for no apparent reason. (Perhaps in honor of the Sherlock series with Cumberbatch, whose new season kicks off these days).
WATSON plastic, in contrast to simple ABS, is transparent, or rather, translucent. Its coloring gives a peculiar “candy” effect and this determines the artistic decisions based on it. PLA plastic is opaque, but this is not their only difference. ABS is “petroleum” plastic, and PLA plastic is created from agricultural waste - corn, potatoes, sugar beets ... Therefore, it is considered more environmentally friendly, although for the consumer it is, in general, all the same. He has a less strong odor at work, although it cannot be said that ABS also somehow stinks disgustingly.
ABS is soluble in acetone, PLA is soluble in dichloroethane. This is in case the details need to be glued. PLA is more rigid and elastic than ABS and has a lower melting point - this must be taken into account when working with it, as well as during storage and use of products. Let's say a toy made from PLA can “leak” in the summer in the heat if left on the car panel. Do not make it out of the handle for heating tools.
But Christmas toys can be freely made from both types of plastic!

The 3D pen Dadget has a switch between the types of plastic - this is necessary because they require different temperatures.

Having worked with different types of plastic, I discovered some practical features:
WATSON-plastic is softer and more flexible, making small parts easier is more accurate and more accurate.

Products from it partially retain their plasticity after cooling, but they are less durable in thin parts; more material is required to create volume. The ABS handle is easier to control because it bends more easily - this is important for young children.
PLA-plastic is so rigid that sometimes its elasticity sometimes prevents it from working accurately with a pen - you need to release an extra turn from the card that hangs in the air and clings to the wire. I was hoping that this quality would make it possible to make spatial frameworks out of it without a foundation - but no, nothing came of it. Even at minimum temperature, it does not cool down fast enough to not sag. Therefore, bulk figures still have to be done on some suitable basis, although less plastic is required for the frame in the case of PLA. Another feature - it sticks worse to surfaces. For ABS, I used parchment paper so that it does not stick, PLA can be placed directly on the table. There are pros and cons to this.

As a result, I made both Christmas tree decorations — both a WATSON snowman and a PLA bird — using walnuts as a template. (This process is well shown in the video). The snowman is molded with a thinner thread with a denser styling, and the bird remains stiff even in the form of a frame with voids - this is the main difference in working with different plastics.

Well, yes, I’m certainly not Michelangelo, but this only confirms the fact that you can work with a 3D pen without any artistic talent. Do-it-yourself Christmas toys delight regardless of their artistic merits!

Watch a short video of working with different types of plastic and decide for yourself which one suits you best.
I would take both - it is most convenient to make the framework of the structure from PLA and fill it with ABS.
Conclusions:
Palettes are almost a must for a 3D pen. Of course, you can buy kilograms of filament for printers and use it - it will come out cheaper - but for art crafts a variety of colors and ease of presentation are more important.
You can buy the PLA palette and the WATSON palette on the DADJET.ru website, and the GEEKT-3DPEN promotional code will give a small discount there.
