First Generation Toyota Electro Multivision (EMV) System Overview

Good day!

Today you will not surprise anyone with a monitor in a car. They are put regularly even in harmony. We are all used to controlling car functions by touching the screen or watching TV while standing in traffic. Of course, this was not always the case, such devices have their own development history, which is no less interesting than the history, for example, of personal computers.

So, today we look at the first-born of such systems from Toyota. EMV was first introduced 30 years ago, back in 1985, as an option for the Toyota Soarer in the MZ12.

This is what the very sayra looked like:

By the way, next year the next generation Soarer was introduced, in which the system was significantly modernized.

In 1985, the system could do the following:

  • Show electronic tachometer, speed, transmission and other useful information;
  • Show fuel consumption graph;
  • Remind you of upcoming car maintenance;
  • Show TV.

System Composition

All first-generation EMV units are shown in the figure:

Information Display Modes

Consider in more detail what the system is capable of.

So, turn on the car:

For 2-3 seconds, System Check is displayed on the screen. At this point, the systems listed on the screen should be checked, although some sources claim that this is nothing more than a start screen.

After the system boots up, Drive Screen turns on.

In this mode, the following information is displayed:
  • Engine revs. In the form of numbers and in the form of a graph;
  • Automatic gear lever position;
  • Suspension mode TEMS (SPORT, NORM, AUTO);
  • Operation mode of the automatic transmission electronic control system (PWR, NORM, ECON);
  • In case of turning off the overdrive (overdrive), the “OD OFF” icon is displayed;
  • When you turn on the cruise control, the set speed is displayed;
  • Upcoming service reminders are shown;
  • In the event of a malfunction, the Check Engine icon lights up.

Press the middle button on the mode switch and drop out on the fuel consumption information screen.

Here, in the form of graphs, fuel consumption (in km / l) is displayed, instantaneous - on the right, history in a few minutes - on the left.
The right button will show us the service screen.

The system allows you to select a service procedure (for example, change brake pads) from a predefined list and indicate the distance in kilometers through which this procedure must be repeated. As soon as this run approaches, a reminder will be displayed on the screen.

And finally, the TV. It works like a regular TV, it is controlled from the remote control. Shows only if the car is stationary.

I recommend watching a video on how it all works live.

A detailed Japanese advertising booklet with information about the car and the EMV system (Incidentally, a unique site, the world's largest online collection of JDM car advertising catalogs has been compiled).
