First quadrocopter
Now, any adult, responsible and making money, a man can afford to buy a quadrocopter to scare his colleagues in the office or on the street with his help.
And the first active prototype of such a toy (and at the same time of all existing helicopters) was the Botezat helicopter, which took off in the distant 1922. Moreover, as part of one of the experimental flights, this device was able to lift a cargo weighing 450 kg to a height of 4 meters.
Georgy Aleksandrovich Botezat was an American of Russian origin, inventor, professor at the Petrograd Institute of Technology. He also graduated from two institutes, in Kharkov and Belgium (Belgium), was an electrical engineer. But the main reason why they remember him is a helicopter.
Tests of one of the first helicopters equipped with four screws began in 1922. The multi-screw scheme made it possible to simplify the control of the device: the rotation was carried out by changing the position of the bow of the helicopter. Each variable pitch propeller consisted of six blades. The design used stretch marks of strings ... from the piano.
The development of the quadrocopter was conducted with the money of the US Army. The goal is to create an aircraft with vertical take-off and landing. Botezat did not have the patience to develop prototypes, so he immediately set about building a full-size device.
Despite the $ 200,000 spent on the program, which was a large amount in the first half of the last century, the project was closed due to some problems. In particular, just to fly forward, a tailwind was needed. Botezat wanted to continue working and fix this problem, but did not have time.
The inventor is next to the aircraft.
