The Ulzr1z group, calling itself “information security specialists”, executed a deface of several sites at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, linking its action to the anniversary of the death of Aaron Schwartz, who committed suicide on January 11, 2013, while under judicial investigation for organizing allegedly illegal access to online documents Libraries.

The attack affected sites on one of the MIT domains responsible for hosting courses taught at the institute, and was not severely destructive - the hacktivists changed the text of the home page of each site to this:

    #OpAaronSwartz
    Hacked!

As a confirmation of their participation in this, Ulzr1z attached a screenshot of the Wordpress admin panel to their tweet, to which they gained access.

Immediately after the death of Aaron Schwartz, MTI Rector Rafael Reif remarked about him: “I’m unpleasant to think that MIT took part in any events that ended in tragedy.” Nevertheless, due to the fact that it was on the MIT network that Aaron Schwartz left the laptop, on which illegal documents were downloaded, hacktivists believe that the institute’s leadership secretly collaborated with the investigation on the side of the prosecution, whose actions actually led to the death of Schwartz. This was indirectly confirmed by Aaron’s father, saying at the funeral that “He [Aaron Schwartz] was killed by the government, and the MIT betrayed all its basic principles.”

Hacking MIT sites on the anniversary of this sad event is likely to become, if not already, a peculiar tradition - last year an action similar to Ulzr1z marked the more famous Anonymous.
