In fairness, google warns you when you delete photo (s) that it will remove it from the device that uploaded it as well. There is a popup that forces you to confirm: "Remove from your Google Account, devices with backup turned on and the places shared within Google Photos?" It could certainly be a little more clear - Sorry that happened to you.

Jul 14, 2018 · When I query a photo in Google photos via the API, it doesn't return any location data that is associated with the image. I can see the location on the map when I view the information about the image in Google Photos, however the API doesn't give me these coordinates.

The idea is that you upload them to Google Photos to free up space on your phone. However if deleting them from Google Photos it shouldn’t delete the local copy.
