China introduced its own national operating system

The Chinese national operating system, China Operating System (COS), is designed to push the market leaders Android and iOS.

A new government-approved mobile operating system was introduced in China. The operating system is called China Operating System, or COS, a platform based on Linux and developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Liantong Network Communications Technology, located in Shanghai. This open source OS (based on an open core) is designed to break the monopoly of Apple and Google in the Chinese mobile market.

Chinese developers claim that the new system is more reliable and safer than Android, and more flexible than iOS. It is assumed that it will become the main competitor to these products - for starters, in the local market.

The operating system was developed by the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in conjunction with Shanghai Liantong Network Communications Technology. The project is reportedly approved and funded by the Chinese government.

COS is based on the open Linux kernel. However, she herself is not open "for security reasons." The developers expect that their offspring will be spared the problems that foreign operating systems have. So, most foreign products cannot offer the necessary depth of localization, including a graphical interface, input methods and speech recognition. In addition, according to engineers, COS is free from software and hardware for tracking user activities that can be placed on operating systems by manufacturers from other countries. This statement is especially relevant in the light of recent scandals related to large-scale tracking of “everyone and everything” on the Internet by NSA employees.

COS can be used on smartphones, tablets, computers and digital set-top boxes. The operating system offers access to its own application store, which today has about 100 thousand programs.

About when it is planned to launch the first COS-based devices, the developers did not report.
