Talk about money. Jelastic vs shared hosting & VPS

On Habré they don’t like when providers talk about money, but tomorrow, October 16, the beta test of Jelastic.Cloud in Infobox, which started a month ago, ends , and we decided to calculate how much the operation of a typical site on Jelastic will cost. And also compare these numbers with the most popular services for hosting sites - shared hosting and VPS.

For research, we deployed a WordPress site from the autoinstaller , put a topic on it a little heavier than the standard ones, and added a dozen pages with images.

According to our statistics, most of the sites hosted have up to 500 unique visitors per day, each of which goes on average 2-3 pages on a site. A page on average loads in 20-25 requests. In total, we have about 35 thousand requests per day to the average site, about 1600 requests per hour, which in practice corresponds to a load of 250 MHz (2 cloudlets) on Apache and 1 cloudlet on MySQL (with caching enabled).

According to our rates, we provide three cloudlets for free, so if the load was distributed absolutely evenly throughout the day, you could switch from a traditional hosting to Jelastic, paying only for disk space (about 5 rubles per GB per month). But in practice, the site has an uneven load distribution throughout the day.

Our load simulation using several servers sending requests of different intensities to the site using siege (a total of just 35,000 requests) showed a maximum load of 7 cloudlets on Apache and 2 cloudlets on a MySQL server.

    More details:
    • 4 hours - 1 Apache Cloudlet + 1 MySQL Cloudlet
    • 14 hours - 2 Apache Cloudlets + 1 MySQL Cloudlet
    • 4 hours - 3 Apache cloudlets + 2 MySQL cloudlets, minus free cloudlets 4 * 2 * 0.35 = 2.8 rubles
    • 4 hours - 4 Apache Cloudlets + 2 MySQL Cloudlets, minus the free cloudlets 4 * 3 * 0.35 = 4.2 rubles

Total: 7 rubles per day, 210 rubles per month.

Yes, this amount is slightly larger than the minimum hosting tariff, but the Jelastic platform provides isolated resources, which allows you not to depend on the load generated by other users of the platform + configuration flexibility not available on shared hosting allows your site to work several times faster.

Now, using the same example, compare Jelastic with VPS. Most of the day, resource consumption was 3 cloudlet, which is equivalent to 600 MHz of the processor and 368 MB of RAM. VPS-512, which costs 299 rubles per month, covers these resources with a margin. But during hours of maximum load (1200 MHz, 768 MB), I could not provide all the necessary resources, which would inevitably lead to a slowdown in the site.

In addition, you should also remember that you configure VPS completely independently, which, on the one hand, allows you to configure the most suitable for you, but, on the other hand, leaves the likelihood of an error when the site will run slower, and resources at this consume more. Everything is already configured on our Jelastic hosting, although you can change the predefined parameters if you wish.

    Let's evaluate the habraeffect?

And what will happen if you run an advertising campaign and a lot of visitors come to your site in a short period of time? We tested the option when 5,000 people visit the site in 2 hours.

As before, testing was done with Siege, but its settings were loaded with requests for two landing-pages, to which the bulk of the transitions were supposed, and not to the entire site. The maximum load on the Apache node for this period amounted to 3171 MHz, which corresponds to the maximum allowed 16 cloudlets (taking into account the errors of the monitoring system). At the same time, the site visually opened pretty quickly even at the peak of the load, and the percentage of failed downloads was 0.02%

    • Transactions: 119974 hits
    • Availability: 99.98%
    • Elapsed time: 7277.39 secs
    • Data transferred: 21114.96 MB
    • Transaction rate: 16.48 trans / sec
    • Throughput: 2.88 MB / sec
    • Successful transactions: 119977
    • Failed transactions: 26
    • Longest transaction: 8.02
    • Shortest transaction: 0.63

Due to caching with such a load, MySQL consumed only 3 cloudlets. As a result, a two-hour advertising company cost 16 * 0.35 * 2 = 11.2 rubles, and if it lasted a day, the cost would not exceed 150 rubles.

Thanks to all the beta testers who helped us make Jelastic better! As well as readers who survived the marathon of our Jelastic posts. We promise that the next post will be about something else. ;) In addition, we hope that the club of fans of Jelastic will only grow! Join us and you - all the details about the platform can be found on our website .

UPDATED! On the last day, the beta decided to reduce the cost of using disk space by 5 times and adjusted our calculations. Now 1 GB of disk space costs 0.7 kopecks / hour (~ 5 rubles / month).
