LG IPS277 - Homemade 27 inches with FullHD

Good day to all! Raise your hand those who have a monitor with a diagonal of 27 inches at home? :) Something few hands, lower it. Twenty-seven inches long ago went down from the professional and semi-professional segments to the home, without losing the main consumer qualities. All models can be divided into two large groups - 27 "FullHD and 27" WQHD / WQXGA. The main difference is the resolution of the matrix. In the first case, we have the classic 1920x1080, in the second - 2560x1440 / 1600. The second group of monitors requires decent hardware capacity to work with such a resolution, so we will consider it some other time. But about 27 “FullHD monitor we’ll tell you today.

    Specifications

The model we are considering today is called LG IPS277L, and its characteristics are as follows:

    Display
    27 ", matte finish, AH-IPS
    Resolution
    1920x1080p
    Response time
5 ms GtG, 14 ms ISO
    Brightness
    250 cd / m 2
    Interfaces
    VGA (D-sub), 2xHDMI, MHL Support
    Backlight
    LED Dot Matrix

A simple and solid set of characteristics and interfaces: there is both an old type of connection (which, despite all its limitations, is still alive and alive), and modern HDMI, which will allow you to connect your favorite ultrabook or desktop.

    Design

The design of the monitor is not its main characteristic, but we simply cannot say a few words about it.

A neat case that creates the illusion of a complete lack of a frame in the off state, a matte front panel, a simple and reliable stand, almost completely eliminating the arbitrary movement of the display surface.

All interface connectors are located on the rear side: the

power supply is external, so you can hide it where it will be invisible, and hold only three small cables to the monitor - power, main video signal and MHL.

    Capabilities

The IPS277 model has an AH-IPS matrix LM270 series with LED backlight. About the resolution of the matrix and other characteristics is written a little higher, but we will move on to the most interesting: to what real users and online publications write about it, comparing it in detail with similar solutions from other manufacturers.

Superior in completeness tests were carried out by craftsmen at the Overclockers.ru test laboratory, several detailed reviews were also in foreign sources, in addition, the monitor also has a "younger brother" - the IPS237 model, which differs only in the display diagonal - the matrix and other elements are produced using the same the technology itself on similar equipment, so that part of the materials on the 23-inch "brother" can be safely applied to the older model, making appropriate amendments.

LG IPS277L is designed for use in the "amateur" sphere: home photo processing and working with video, use as an external monitor for a powerful laptop with a not-so-outstanding screen (the market is full of 15 "models with good characteristics and a disgusting display on a TN-matrix with a resolution 1376x768), or using the monitor as a “game”, it doesn’t matter what the source of the signal is: a game console or a powerful PC, and this is the use case that dictates most of the engineering solutions that can be found in this nd model: the use of HDMI and VGA-interfaces, resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, factory color calibration and color gamut of 90 +% of sRGB space.

Tests showed that factory calibration yields sRGB matching at ˜91% and AdobeRGB expanded color space at ˜65%. The best performance in the class!

At a standard “working” brightness of 100 nits, the measured contrast was at or above the level stated in the official specifications - from 1000: 1 to 1100: 1.

If you have a desire, a colorimeter, a photospectrometer and the corresponding knowledge of how to use all this tasty equipment, the monitor can be quite successfully adapted to more serious work with graphics: after simple manipulations, the LG IPS277L easily receives a UGRA certificate.

Why do we need calibration if the monitor has already been calibrated “out of the box”? If you do not know, then most likely you will not need it. In fact, the factory calibration is performed alone for the entire batch, and each of the instances has its own characteristics and “soul”, so if you seriously decide to do graphics, you won’t be able to do without the finest adjustment of each particular instance, and the designers will suit your needs, photographers and printers customize each monitor, no matter how cool and professional it is. This model does not belong to the professional segment, but it is capable of producing a good picture and it can be used in amateur photo processing, working with video, graphics and printing.

The model and fans of computer games and films in native resolution will not disappoint: a high matrix response rate coupled with low latencies (the so-called input lag) when displaying a picture on the display will allow you to set headshots in network shooters without any problems, and a large screen diagonal + Classic 1080p resolution will help you immerse yourself in computer battles without being distracted by the outside world.

Viewing angles are also fully consistent with industry standards for IPS-matrices:

Of course, there are models with a resolution of 2560x1440 that allow you to display more information with the same diagonal, but support for this resolution requires a connection via two-channel DVI-D or DisplayPort, and most of the content still comes out in the format of 1920x1080, yes and game manufacturers "sharpen" their offspring precisely for excellent work with this resolution: a further increase does not give a noticeable increase in picture quality (especially if you use anti-aliasing and texture filtering), but it significantly increases ments for hardware. Consoles (and the overwhelming number of laptops) have no such permission at all: either there are no corresponding output ports, or there are not enough hardware capabilities to seamlessly display a WQHD picture.

    Conclusion

The model has the best in class features “out of the box”. Excellent performance in terms of color gamut, contrast, brightness and white balance, plus a special matte finish that allows, if not completely eliminating the crystalline effect, at least minimizing its effect. Perhaps after spending a couple of sleepless nights calibrating the image and trying to get the perfect colors, you can get the best results on any of the other models, but the indicators will differ by such a small amount that they will remain at the level of error or the placebo effect. Geeks and people who are interested in computer graphics do not raise any special questions, especially considering the fact that most budget IPS monitors (other vendors) contain e-IPS or AH-IPS matrices made by LG Electronics.

The disadvantages of this model are a direct continuation of the pros and arise from the technology of production of such LCD panels. The Glow effect has not gone away, you can completely achieve its absence, perhaps, only by switching to a controlled OLED backlight or directly to the OLED matrix of displays, and this is a completely different technology. For 27 ", the resolution of 1920x1080 gives a fairly large point size, but it allows you to easily work with text and view video on a 1-to-1 scale without loading the processor and video adapter with unnecessary work to resize the picture on the fly. In addition, not all signal sources they support a resolution higher than 1080p, and what is fraught with displaying a non-native signal by resolution on the LCD matrix, and so everyone knows. Even the half-resolution (1440x900) on retina screens without anti-aliasing produces disgusting picture quality, and retina-like anti-aliasing on systems other than Mac OS X is not yet available. Game consoles of the current generation are still inaccessible to output a higher resolution image.

The lack of DVI-D and VESA mounts for the wall bracket is offset by two HMDI and a robust stand.
