OpenOffice saves people $ 21 million daily

Apache OpenOffice developers have calculated how much money they save humanity by distributing free office applications. OpenOffice downloads an average of 138,928 times daily. If you use the technique of the enemy and take the price of paid MS Office (on average, $ 150 for the version of Home and Student), you will save $ 21 million per day. Or $ 7.6 billion a year.

Of course, such a calculation is very arbitrary. Not all OpenOffice users would buy MS Office for $ 150. Although many would buy - so for them the free alternative is really a cost-saving option. The calculation does not take into account the popular LibreOffice, which also saves the public several billion dollars a year.

Today everyone needs office applications: schoolchild, student, teacher, doctor, lawyer, civil servant, businessman in any industry. Twenty years ago, mainly businessmen used such programs. It was logical to take $ 595 from them for a copy of MS Excel (this program alone cost so much in 1992). Now the situation has changed. OpenOffice applications are downloaded by users from 236 countries and territories. The chart above shows the density of downloads per 1000 Internet users in each country.
