Smartphone overview Nokia 808 PureView

At the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, we introduced the Nokia 808 PureView smartphone, which could surprise everyone. The main feature of the smartphone was a camera with a matrix size of 41 megapixels: it is more than any soap dish, digital SLR cameras and even the medium format. Some users who had just learned the formula “megapixels without optics are nothing” were at a loss. However, the uniqueness of PureView technology is not in the number of megapixels, but in how they are used.

Today we will analyze all the innovations in the Nokia 808 PureView and talk about all the advantages of this revolutionary camera phone.

    Design

The device is made in a classic case, but it looks very interesting; in white, it generally resembles an EVA robot from the WALL • I cartoon - all because of a protruding camera on the back of the case. The reason for this was the huge matrix, thanks to which the smartphone takes such high-quality photos. The dimensions of the Nokia 808 PureView are 123.9 × 60.2 × 13.9 mm with an extension of up to 17.95 mm in the camera area, and the weight is 169 grams. Having tested the dimensions of the device in the pockets of a number of pants, we can safely say that the smartphone is hiding everywhere, and, to the delight of hipsters, even in skinny jeans. In general, in life, the phone looks thinner than in photographs, but the white model seems larger than black.

The body of the device is made of polycarbonate with a ceramic finish, thanks to the matte surface it does not get dirty and lies pleasantly in the hand. Moreover, the body material is strong and with a bang withstood a couple of accidental drops. For three weeks of testing, it did not show any noticeable scratches. Build quality is also not satisfactory: neither the back cover nor the keys made of stainless steel do not play. Smartphones will be available in white and black cases.

On top of the case are a micro-HDMI connector hidden behind a plastic plug, micro-USB for connecting to a PC and charging the battery, a 3.5 mm audio-visual connector for a headset and video output, as well as a barely noticeable microphone for noise reduction when talking on the phone or recording video. On the right are the volume keys that control the photo zoom, the smartphone’s lock key (which turns on the flashlight when pressed for a long time) and the camera key that activates shooting photos or videos. At the bottom of the device is the main microphone, a powerful and high-quality loudspeaker, a hole for the wrist strap. Right below the screen are the standard Symbian mechanical call, menu, and call disconnect keys, and above the screen are a speaker and a front camera for video calls.

On the back of the smartphone is a 41-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and an LED flash. Under the back cover are the battery and micro-SIM and microSD card slots. Climbing “under the hood” of the phone is quite simple, while the back panel is very tight and does not accidentally open. By the way, if you flip the back panel itself, you can see a large NFC-frame on it.

    Screen

The Nokia 808 PureView uses a 4-inch AMOLED display with a standard 640 × 360 pixel resolution for Symbian. Despite not the highest resolution, working with such a screen is quite comfortable - thanks to the use of ClearBlack technology, thanks to which the screen is not afraid of bright sunlight and has large viewing angles and excellent brightness and color reproduction. To protect the screen from scratches and chips in the event of an accidental fall, Gorilla Glass, a time-tested protective glass, is used.

    Cameras

So we got to the most important thing! For the first time in a smartphone, a camera with a 41 megapixel sensor is used. However, behind such a large matrix is hidden not the trick of the company's marketers, but Nokia PureView Pro technology, the idea of which has been hatched by the engineers of Nokia and Carl Zeiss for about five years. The essence of this technology is that having a 38 megapixel image at the input (this is the active number of pixels when shooting 4: 3 frames), the Nokia 808 PureView programmatically combines several neighboring pixels into one “super pixel”, giving an output frame size of 2 or more MP up to 8 MP. The resulting image has the best color reproduction, sharpness and, importantly, practically no noise (up to ISO 800).

The aperture value when shooting is f / 2.4, so frames are obtained with the bokeh typical of SLR cameras. Moreover, such a diaphragm, coupled with a sensor that is 1 / 1.2 inches in size (2.5 times larger than the Nokia N8, and almost the same as in Nikon 1 Series mirrorless cameras), allows you to shoot in low light, and taking into account the focal length of 8 mm, with this crop factor, the equivalent focal length is 26 mm for 16: 9 images and 28 mm for 4: 3 images.

The Nokia 808 PureView has significantly improved the camera interface, so now it is very different from the interface of the previous Nokia N8 top camera phone. Three shooting modes are available in the camera menu: “automatic”, “shooting modes” (preset modes) and “artistic” (user setting of all parameters).

In automatic mode, the smartphone takes 5-megapixel pictures using PureView Pro technology, the user has flash control and the ability to zoom in on the frame.

In the "shooting modes", the user can select the preset modes available in most cameras: landscape, automatic, close-up, portrait, sport, night mode, night portrait, spotlight, snow.

In the "artistic" mode, all camera settings are left to the user, and for quick access to frequently used settings, you can save three of their options. Settings include the following parameters: full resolution or PureView, aspect ratio (4: 3 or 16: 9), resolution in PureView mode (8, 5, 3 and 2 MP), JPEG quality (normal and highest quality), saturation, contrast and sharpness. In addition, you can set bracketing for the subsequent creation of HDR photos, take single-frame shooting (from two to 1500 frames with an interval of 5 seconds to 30 minutes) to create time-lapse videos, and set the timer for 2, 10 and 30 seconds.

The focus point is selected by pressing a finger on the desired location on the viewfinder. If you hold the screen for a second, you can select the focus mode: endless, hyperfocal, close-up, automatic. In addition, settings for exposure compensation, white balance, ISO (50 to 1600) and shutter speed are available, you can turn on the viewfinder grid and the histogram.

Do not forget that the Nokia 808 PureView allows you to shoot no less beautiful HD-video. There is still the same settings package. The same three modes are also available for shooting video. In automatic mode, the smartphone records video in 1080p format and the only thing you can control is turning on / off continuous autofocus and flash backlight. In “shooting modes” there are five preset settings: low light, automatic, sports, spotlight and snow, plus options available for automatic mode.

In art mode, you can adjust the video resolution (1080p, 720p, 360p), frame rate (30/25/24/15 frames per second), saturation, contrast, sharpness, exposure compensation, white balance. At 1080p, you can use 4x zoom without losing quality, at 720p - 6x, and at 360p - 12x. When recording video, digital stabilization is available.

The sound when recording is as clear as the video. Unlike most other smartphones that record sound with a volume of up to 110 dB, the Nokia 808 PureView can record sound without distortion at a sound pressure level of 140 dB - this is the approximate maximum volume at rock concerts.

    Communication

The Nokia 808 PureView smartphone is equipped with Wi-Fi (802.11b / g / n) and Bluetooth 3.0 modules. The device can act as a DLNA server, so fast WiFi will be extremely useful for streaming media files. As a fallback for those who do not have a DLNA receiver or a fast router, the picture can also be transmitted via micro-HDMI. Considering that the minute of video captured in 1080p format weighs 150 MB, the presence of HDMI is justified a little more than completely.

For navigation, a GPS module is installed in the device using A-GPS technology, which reduces the time it takes to find the current location. The GPS receiver is used not only for the free full-fledged offline car navigation “Nokia Maps”, but also for geotagging photos.

The Nokia 808 PureView has an NFC module for communicating with a range of Nokia accessories and other devices. In addition, Nokia 808 PureView has passed certification for compatibility with the contactless payment system MasterCard PayPass, so that the smartphone can be used not only as a camera, but also as a wallet.

The smartphone also has an FM radio with a transmitter for broadcasting your own music at a certain frequency of the FM band, which will be primarily useful to car enthusiasts.

    Iron

The smartphone runs on a single-core processor with a frequency of 1300 MHz and is equipped with 512 MB of RAM. This is enough for the quick operation of both the Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 system and the camera that processes a huge array of graphic data.

The device uses a BP-4D 1400 mAh battery, its capacity is enough for 11 hours of talk in 2G networks and for 6.5 hours in 3G networks, and the maximum standby time is 465 hours. In practice, the phone after a week of inactivity still showed a full charge. With the partial use of navigation, the frequent use of the camera (it's interesting to play around), and periodic calls and Internet surfing, the phone lasts on one charge for more than two days.

The device’s own memory is 16 GB, but it is expandable to 48 GB using a 32 GB microSD card.

    Equipment

The phone comes with a Nokia AC-50 charger with USB interface, a Nokia CA-190CD USB cable for charging and transferring data, a simple Nokia WH-209 stereo headset, an NFC info card, a black strap and a user guide.
