My friend is a computer
A wonderful thing is the general cleaning: you can always find heaps of things about existence that you never suspected. So I managed to get into the waste paper box. It’s a pity that I can’t convey my expression when I found the Crocodile magazine for June 1985 (No. 17). Due to the fact that the magazine was published long before my birth, I found a lot of funny things in it (at least they now seem like that).
But in particular I was pleased with the article “Betting on a punch card” by A. Moralevich. Actually, Habr forgive me, I can not help but share this article.

The crocodile called for throwing electronics into the masses of children as early as last year (see A. Moralevich’s Love for Electricity in No. 17). The faster we introduce our inquisitive child to the products of the electronics industry, the faster the pace of scientific and technological progress across the country when today's children become adults and enter workshops and laboratories.
In last year’s speech, attention was paid mainly to an electronic toy. The subject of this author’s current research is the school computer, achievements and problems of computerization of the school.
And at least it’s good that the schoolchildren in this building (according to the methodological developments of the Chef, Gorono and Rono Institute: safety considerations and maintaining concentration) are strictly forbidden, welcoming any deputies and commissions, to get up from desks with computer equipment.

Are the seventies far from us, but here: the list of mass working professions of those years did not contain anything related to computers. Ten years have passed - and this list is vast, and its growth is avalanche-like. And the state’s technical policy for the future is very clearly defined: the creation of workstations (computer-based workstations) in all sectors of labor activity. Such a workplace will destroy the monotony of labor, routine production activities. The computer will free the human brain for truly creative work, providing without delay, this very second the most intricate information. And all this in the foreseeable future. Because the silent computer is by no means as noticeable as, say, an airbus in the sky, I worked for myself quietly - and by today, industry and territorial computer centers in all respects - profits, costs, services — head to head with such giants as transport and communications. And again, there’s no place to go: computer linguistic knowledge is immutable and will soon become an integral part of the population’s culture. And the questionnaire about language skills will look like this: “I speak Udmurt, Russian, German, Fortran and BASIC.” It is also known that a significant part of the adult population uses computer languages BASIC, Fortran, Algol and others, as well as the basics of computer wisdom, children will teach. Citizens, we can’t get anywhere, and succumb to this: the eggs will fruitfully teach both chicken and its rooster. And again, there’s no place to go: computer linguistic knowledge is immutable and will soon become an integral part of the population’s culture. However, the egg must create the prerequisites for its educational activities. It is known who should create them, but what has been done over the past year by ministries and departments to computerize schools and childhood? And here's the thing: as before, team members unfamiliar to each other lead an unfamiliar ship in an unfamiliar ship and crew on the sea.
Before computerization, quite a while ago, there was a game industrialization of childhood. But, child, there are such cut-in machines in mines, and ice-breakers in the seas. Therefore, preparing you for entry into the world of adults, we will release for you models of a logger and icebreaker. And since you are a child and you cannot penetrate into the subtleties, we will make an icebreaker from a whole chock, without the mass of details inherent in it in life. But - so you guys like it! - on board the ice-bell, a dawn is drawn, holds a carrot-carrot in its paw, which is what conducts an orchestra of merry toads and crickets.
And alive, alive, the analogy in the coddles is to let out a children's computer from an overwhelmed electronic chunk, and a hint on his barrel.
Although all the information collected by pedagogy and science is fiercely against a dud, against a computer lousy industry with children. Children wonder and immediately fit into the computer. Fifth-graders, even some first-graders
make numb with the enthusiasm of experienced programmers of super-large computers. Arriving in Novosibirsk at the Olympics for young programmers, seven children from school No. 1, who know the international programming languages fortran, basic and algol, were informed that the competitions will be held in the little-known language "rapier", which Muscovites never knew, and the Novosibirsk people studied " rapier "for three years. What's next? The embarrassment of returning home? No, in three days the language was mastered, seven began to compete.
No need for a computer crib to draw a bunny!
And what is the state of affairs?
“Psychologist!” Is heard from everywhere. “The road to the design bureau and design bureau is an engineering psychologist. An engineer either teases with children in a computer, or strikes hard technology inaccessible to a student. Without a partnership with an engineering psychologist, an engineer will not create anything worthwhile, although to this day the engineer prevents the psychologist on an equal footing and on staff from participating in the development. A truly friendly computer engineer cannot do. Dry engineering thinking gives, so to speak, a hard hockey stopper, but you need rhythmic gymnastics! To the psychologist on school computer production!
And there is no road, not even stitches. After all, how many bright psychological heads should be involved in the development of small computers for school binding at the USSR Ministry of Electronic Industry! And how many are there? But there is no one.
There is no leader, there is no centralization, there is no brain trust, but there are perhaps scattered brain cooperatives on semi-social principles.
An optimistic exclamation will interrupt the sadness of these paragraphs:
- And "Agate"? Have you forgotten about him?
Yes, indeed, a small, school-oriented Agate computer. Manufacturers and designers beat themselves in the chest, vowing to overrun the state with this apparatus. You’ll open the door to the plumber in the jack, and he’s already in a quilted jacket: I say that I’m coming to you, Agat calculated, you got a mixer.
So, "Agate." But, looking at the trains on the railways, you establish: everything is not for them, not for “Agatom,” the trains are loaded. Twenty pieces of such devices — yes, there are in Novosibirsk. Sometimes even more than half of them work.
“The whole world,” said TP Kravchuk, director of the school No. 1, “is working on computer friendliness now.” A friendly computer recognizes the voice of its permanent operator and turns on that voice. He tells his operator: “Don’t be nervous, it’s not we who broke the firewood. Well done, but I broke firewood. Come on again, I can take everything into account and correct it. ” A friendly computer is extremely resistant to the erroneous actions of a novice operator. Moreover, it adjusts to the most common mistakes and corrects them. A friendly computer nurtures the mood and performance of the operator. This is a friendly computer, while "Agate" is still difficult to call such. After twenty-five minutes of work on Agate, even tenth-grade aces of school No. 1, accustomed to "adult" cars, experience lacrimation, eye inflammation, and headaches.
And now, moving away from the building a few heavy architecture, I want to summarize what we have.
Is there a centralization of research on a school computer? No, not organized.
As such, in addition to being created by a group of enthusiasts at the chemistry department of Moscow State University, is there a promising apparatus? Not.
Do you have a staff of engineering psychologists for small computers in the producing ministries? No, they are taking hostility, they are contriving without!
Do you have powerful groups of designers on school computer topics in producing ministries? Not.
And if it happens that the computer rushes into the schools, who needs to repair it? Who is repairing you, Tatyana Petrovna?
- We ourselves, on our own, have enough skills. Well, if it’s a difficult case, then our students have very responsive parents. And if at all an extreme case, then trouble-free chefs.
But now, I asked the director of the school No. 1, for example, Syktyvkar. And there are no colossi on its territory, as in the Oktyabrsky district of Moscow, where the schoolchildren of school No. 1, which are very desirable there, practice on large computers: Moscow State University, the Institute of Steel and Alloys, the Main Computing Center of the USSR State Standard, the Moscow Institute of National Economy, the Institute of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences , gentle institute-chef? What to do with repairs in the schools of Syktyvkar, Molodechno, Elabuga?
“A door has recently opened to me ...” said Tatyana Petrovna.
A door had recently opened to her, and the director habitually gritted her teeth: a lot of work, and again brought someone.
Brought three strict double-breasted men.
“Do not be alarmed, we are not an excursion or deputation,” said the men. “We are responsible workers of the Central Statistical Bureau of the USSR. We came for reconnaissance. You must all know about the computerization of high school. Thousands of computers are about to get up in schools, and who will repair them? Legislatively, this has not yet been assigned to anyone, and we at the Central Statistical Office of the USSR have judged: what if we ... Geographically throughout the country, our services and our repair base are everywhere.
I then said to Tatyana Petrovna Kravchuk:
- Incredible! Legislation did not assign anything to them, and the CSB is scouting how to hang a weight on your neck. What is nobility? Love for school? The desire to provide the Central Statistical Bureau of the USSR a new article of income? Guardianship of the future of the country and its youth?
“I will bring it,” said Tatyana Petrovna, “all the questions“ what is this? ” in one answer: this is a case of a state approach.
Therefore, it will be someone to repair, it would be that.
Well, but the basis of the foundations, the cornerstone — a school textbook on computer informatics, which, since September, for the first time in the history of our pedagogy should be taught from the eighth grade, is it?
Still missing. True, the manuscript of two co-authors walked around Moscow, the respect for which grew one and a half times wider than its criticality. And somehow, though critically, they were very restrained about the manuscript of the academician. Somehow, perhaps, it’s pathetic. One member correspondent went further, expressed himself in the sense that the book was, of course, a fountain, but parkcultural, not Bakhchisarai, and if very significant improvements were made, then ...
And here a terrible pedagogical miscalculation was made by Tatyana Petrovna Kravchuk. And for this she was executed for a long time. Exactly the same: having glued the names of the co-authors on the manuscript title, the director gave the manuscript to three schoolchildren, secondary, and not the luminaries of computer science, - this is the proposed textbook for next year. Read, you need to know your opinion ...
Publishers who need honest, uncompromising, deep, and prompt reviewers, to whom Plato is a friend, but the truth is more expensive, can get the addresses and surnames of these students from me. Their review received publicity, the textbook was not accepted for publication. What about the new textbook? The combined powerful team of highly competent people under the auspices of a ministry, state, so to speak, is writing a new one? Indeed, for tens of millions of children!
No, he does not compose.
But still, hopefully, a tolerable textbook for schoolchildren by someone’s efforts will be in time. A textbook for many thousands of computer science teachers? It’s also an unprecedented thing for teachers.
Nothing is known about this textbook at all. Although, perhaps, having secluded himself in some monastery, to the cry of corostels and drink, someone from civil motives writes.
And illustrative manuals for schools in the country? Does anyone work on them to publish clever posters, booklets and diagrams in mass circulation?
There are no such studies as of yet. But the posters, I think, are not the worst, because I have a driver’s license, for example, and in a driving school, years ago, the teacher told us this:
- Guys! We will pass the ZIS-5 car, but there are no posters on it at the driving school. Here I got a colorful table "Cutting a carcass of a ram." Your imagination is young, rich, so we will pass the ZIS-5 through the ram.
And we studied the ZIS-5 rear axle in the sacral section of the ram, and no one, surely, will object to me that there is, they say, nothing in common between the ram’s tail and the differential in the rear axle ...
This is the case today. And this is what the founding fathers of the Combine No. 1, Director of the Institute of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician B. N. Naumov and director of the Institute of Electronic Control Machines of the Ministry of Instrument Engineering, Automation and Control Systems of the USSR N. L. Prokhorov, say about the productive dialogue “Schoolboy-computer” :
- We need to look for all the answers on the computerization of the school at the remote control of the machine with the children, and not during the "general theoretical" discussions. This is the task of a teacher working in this new field.
Everything is fair here, but only teachers are said. And together with them and the children, seven to eight union ministers plus the leading designers of their ministries would look very attractive. Behind the consoles of mass workable school computers, finally created by our ministries. Or at least one ministry, but tough to those appointed.
After all, Timur, as you know, was famous for his team, but what can we hope for, say, the Timur school computer being developed for a very long time, if the whole team is ridiculous with him - One green engineer and one laboratory assistant? Of course, they think, seek bright technical solutions within their salaries.
But I want to very loudly, almost breaking into a cry, to proclaim, addressing by no means only to the low-power team of the emerging Timur:
- Citizens! Enough of the searches, show the finds!
PS So many years have passed, but has much changed?
