IBM Holey Optochip optical chip can download 5 films per second

    IBM Holey Optochip

IBM engineers presented their prototype Holey Optochip optical chip, which is capable of transmitting one terabit of data per second, at the annual OFC / NFOEC conference in Los Angeles.

The ultra-fast Holey Optochip is a regular quarter-inch silicon CMOS chip. In terms of the volume of information transmitted per second, the channel is equal to the entire online archive of the Library of Congress or 5 high-quality films.

According to IBM representatives, the record speed is provided mainly due to the fact that 48 tiny holes are made in it, used as channels for 24 transmitters and 24 receivers. Holey Optochip consumes no more than 5 watts of electricity.

Over the next ten years, IBM plans to work on a commercial version. Holey Optochip plans to install in a new generation of supercomputers and data centers.
