Fortune Cookies

imageThe year 2011 is drawing to a close, so we decided to take stock of the outgoing year and share cookies with predictions for 2012 for the web and mobile app development market. For predictions, we turned not to Pavel Globe, but to leading Russian developers, namely:
    1. Mikhail Vavilov (Project Management Director, SUP Media),
    2. Leonid Bugaev (creative director, Nordic Agency AB), * we posted a surprise from him at the end of the article
    3. Gaidar Magdanurov (web technology expert, Microsoft),
    4. Alexei Persianov (CEO, ADV).
    5. Mikhail Tokovinin (CEO, Qsoft),
    6. Sergey Urusov (developer, Silverlight / WP7),

How do you rate the success of Russian web development and mobile application development in 2011? What events and projects do you most remember?

    Alexey Persianov :
    - From the interesting: applications of large retailers for the implementation of large Internet projects (Svyaznoy, X5) and the real start of large-scale e-commerce supported by big money and logistics. This will greatly change the battlefield of online commerce. The transition of the financial sector (banks and insurance) from online presence to the use of the Internet as a tool. Organization of sales of services via the Internet, online services, platforms for working with partners. This year, many companies began to use the Internet as a value-added service and began to blur the line between business automation and the platform for the consumer. That's cool. There will be fewer pink frogs, more benefits for the consumer, more money for online business development.

    - It’s much more interesting for me to talk not only about the Russian market, but about the world. If you plan to compete in the global market, then you should create English-language products. The most memorable achievements of Game Insight. A huge respect for Alice Chumachenko, who made the most significant breakthrough in social games and in their release on the Android mobile platform.

    Mikhail Vavilov :
    - In 2011, many events took place. Perhaps the most memorable and popular project of the Russian development was the beginning of the LiveJournal redesign, as well as its first phase that saw the light - an updated commenting system. In the mobile world, I did not see outstanding results, perhaps, except for the RosPIL, RosYama and Pravo projects. Of the events, the advent of Windows on Nokia devices.

    Mikhail Tokovinin :image
    - Honestly, I can’t highlight anything. There is nothing to especially remember. A year ago, it seemed that everything would develop more rapidly.

    Gaidar Magdanurov :
    - The entry of Russian applications into the global market for mobile applications. The appearance of web development standards (from the Association of Interactive Agencies with the support of RAEC)

    Sergey Urusov :
    - Throughout 2011, I observed the following picture: many came to the conclusion that it is better to work for outsourcing and carry out projects for Western companies than to develop their own product. Unfortunately, there are very few successful Russian projects. I associate Russian successes with the development of games. I’ll name ZeptoLab and their game Cut the Rope, for which the team received the Apple Design Awards this year - an unconditional Russian success.
Of the major events is the launch of the Russian Windows Phone 7 application store. The market for Windows Phone 7 applications for the year has shown significant growth, although the qualitative composition of the market is not much different from the Android Market and the App Store. For Russian developers, this is an opportunity to create applications for devices whose sales are growing, and which will be used by compatriots, whose preferences should be more clear.

In your opinion, which areas in web and mobile application development will become more popular in 2012 in Russia? Which will decline?

    Alexey Persianov :
    - I won’t say =)
    Leonid Bugaev :
    - Web development is our main bread. And we are not going to leave this market, we will continue to earn on this. In 2012, the number of flash will decrease, despite the fact that in 2011 its number increased. We look forward to a strategic partnership with Adobe. In the development of mobile applications, I am waiting for interesting and cool things related to the phonegap platform. In my opinion, all directions will grow, since the market is so small and in its infancy that it cannot be said that something will decline.
    Mikhail Vavilov :
    - Abroad - the leading place will remain with Android, thanks to DELL (reputation segment) the share of Windows-based devices will be noticeably increased and the demand for development will appear, the demand for iOS development will not fall, but it will not increase.
    Mikhail Tokovinin :
    - The unambiguous trend is Android. He is greatly undervalued by both developers and businesses.
    Gaidar Magdanurov :
    - Games, social games - will grow. News clients may decline, as more and more people will go to social networks for news.
    Sergey Urusov :
    - I think that the supersaturation of the mobile application markets and the widespread use of HTML 5 will lead to a shift towards mobile web applications. The most sought after application category will remain games. In general, in mobile development there will be the following trends: embedding the functionality of clients of social networks in the application, the use of geo-targeting, cloud services for storing data used in the jQuery Mobile application, and other tools that allow for cross-platform development where there is no need to take into account the specifics of a particular mobile platform.

What qualities, in your opinion, should a developer have to become a leader in his field next year?

    Alexey Persianov :
    - In my opinion, the most important qualities for a developer are responsibility, honesty, openness to cooperation with a client, willingness to change business to market requirements, and always high-quality work.
    Leonid Bugaev :
    - I believe that in order to become a leader, you need to be not an individual developer, but part of the team. Traits that are important for a successful company are the ability to anticipate 2 steps forward, follow the trends of the foreign market, be able to make complex decisions when the economic benefits are not yet visible at the moment.
    Mikhail Vavilov :
    - To become a leader, a developer must love his work, have a desire to work, and most importantly - constantly engage in self-education. You will succeed!
    Mikhail Tokovinin :
    - The same as in the past - to work well and earn satisfied customers and successful cases. Our business is much more conservative than it might seem.
    Gaidar Magdanurov :
    - Thinly feel the needs of customers and new trends in the market. Quickly produce quality products.
    Sergey Urusov :
    - To become a leader in his field, a developer must have one simple quality - perfectionism. That is, pay attention to the little things: in the code, in the functionality of the application, its appearance. The developer must work with the feeling that it is possible and necessary to achieve the best result.

In conclusion, we want to congratulate all readers on the upcoming New Year!
In 2012, we wish you code without bugs, cool applications and cool customers!

PS Leonid Bugaev sent his video interview to us from Bali. Leonid has gone from freelancer to the director general of the agency, and we hope that his example and the examples of our other experts will inspire you, dear readers, to achieve new heights next year.
