Larger and smoother maps with Google MapsGL
- From RSS
We are pleased to announce the launch of the beta version of Google MapsGL , an experimental version of Google Maps that has been enhanced by using WebGL technology.
WebGL is a new Internet technology that allows you to display 3D graphics in your browser without having to install additional software. With it, Google Maps has become even more convenient. Using WebGL gave us the opportunity to make 3D buildings more similar to their prototypes, realize smoother transitions between images and speed up switching between a map and street view. In this case, you do not need to install any plug-ins: just one browser is enough.

If your browser and video card meet the requirements of WebGL, you can start participating in beta testing of updated Maps from today. Just go to maps.google.com/gl and click Try.
WebGL paves the way for a new class of Internet applications, allowing them to use graphics of such quality, to achieve which it was previously necessary to install additional programs on the computer. With our work on Google MapsGL, we hope to set an example for other online graphics teams, as well as raise the standards of online cartographic services.
