Bit-squatting - laughed and forgot

    VKontakte

A couple of days ago, on Habré there was an article that threatened us with a new, if not apocalypse, then at least a catastrophe comparable to Fokusima.

I hasten to disappoint all cyberpunk fans, but the end of the world is again canceled.

After reading the article, and laughing, I decided to conduct an experiment, since the domain is inexpensive.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the domain in one bit from facebook.com or google.com, because the vile bit squatters have already taken over.

I took the domain vkon4akte.ru , which is 1 bit different from the address of the popular social network vkontakte.ru (“t” - 0 1 110100, “4” - 0 0 110100). Quickly tied it to the server and put Ya. Metrica.

Vkontakte's attendance is 25 million unique per day, and 2.5 billion page views.

Attention quiz! The first one who guesses how many requests out of 25,000,000 (to the main one) have problems with “turning the bit” will get nothing.

And this award is well deserved, because there is nothing to guess at all, except no one has visited the site.

Perhaps the Bit-squatting effect is observed only in conjunction with the Microsoft domain (as the author of the first article), I can’t pretend to say that more research is needed (tell me where they give grants for this).

The probability of “flipping a bit" , respectively, can be considered lower than 1/25 000 000.

It is much more likely that the user will be killed by the toilet seat falling from orbit than he will get to the flipping site and download the virus instead of updating.
