Big library for big data
According to analysts, now about 40% of digital content is stored on magnetic tape, and although over time this share will gradually decrease due to competition from disk storage systems, nevertheless, by 2015 the amount of information stored on the tape will increase more than five times. Despite the reduction in the cost of storing disk systems, tape remains a much more profitable medium for long-term storage of electronic archives, so we should not expect the rejection of magnetic tape in the coming years. Of course, if before the tape was the standard backup solution, now it is most often used for storing electronic archives, so the scalability of tape libraries comes to the fore.

In June, the next generation generation of HP StorageWorks Enterprise Storage Library (ESL) tape libraries changed. The first generation of StorageWorks ESL came under the Compaq brand at the beginning of the last decade, then in 2004 HP introduced the current HP StorageWorks ESL E-Series, which is now replaced by the HP StorageWorks ESL G3 (as the reader guessed, G3 means the third generation of libraries). These systems are designed primarily for data centers of large organizations where there is a data storage network based on Fiber Channel, for example, in Russia HP StorageWorks ESL E-Series libraries use a number of leading banks.
Compared to the HP StorageWorks ESL E-Series, the new library has improved scalability - it can accommodate 5,000 cartridges in its maximum configuration compared to 3546 of its predecessor, and as a result, the maximum capacity of HP StorageWorks ESL has grown from ten to fifteen petabytes (using the LTO-5 Ultrium tape format 3280 and hardware compression 2: 1), and the maximum number of tape drives more than doubled to 96. Maximum library performance improved to 96 terabytes / hour. In addition, the lower price level has also decreased - if the initial configuration of the HP StorageWorks ESL E-Series totaled 322 cartridge slots, then the HP StorageWorks ESL G3 can be purchased in the initial configuration with 100 slots.
When storing large amounts of data, not only capacity is important, but also the high reliability of the tape library. Each library rack (and there may be 12 in total) can be equipped with a main and backup power supply, switching to backup paths in case of a failure in the data and command transmission path is provided, and it is planned to install a second robot in the library at the beginning of next year to protect against failures main robot. Thanks to the new Automated Media Pool (AMP) mechanism, you can not only create logical partitions (virtual libraries) inside the library, but also change the redistribution of drives and cartridge slots between them online (there can be up to 16 such partitions in one library).
With its scalability and reliability, HP StorageWorks ESL G3 provides cost-effective long-term storage of large electronic archives.
