Sweden and Denmark Post Switch to Digital Stamps

Denmark and Sweden are preparing to introduce a new system for paying for mail letters, so sending them will be possible even in a makeshift envelope without a stamp. Payment for forwarding is accepted via SMS (message “porto” to the short number 1900), after which a digital code arrives - you need to print it in the place where the mark is usually located.

If you are sending not a letter, but a parcel, parcel or postcard that does not fit into the printer, you can print the code on a separate sheet, cut it with scissors and stick it on the parcel instead of the stamp.

The risk of falsification in this case is not greater than with ordinary stamps, they are sure of the postal department, because in both cases the letter must go through a scanner that verifies the authenticity of the code.

The code consists of twelve characters in three rows, reportedAnders Åsberg, director of marketing for the Swedish-Danish postal association, in an interview with Sydsvenskan. According to the marketer, they will be able to implement the system no earlier than this summer. At the same time, the cost of mail with digital and conventional stamps will be the same.

As in all countries of the world, paper mail in Denmark is rapidly becoming more expensive due to a drastic decrease in turnover. Sending a regular letter will rise in price by the end of the year from the current 5.5 kroons up to 8 kroons ($ 1.48 at the current exchange rate). Over the past two years, the number of letters in Denmark has decreased by 20%. Young people generally do not like to write by hand, preferring electronic devices.

Digital stamps and payment by SMS will help to make the outdated technology of "snail letters" a little clearer for the younger generation.
