Sound proof

Why netbook quality "tweeters"? At first glance, with such a device generally bribes are smooth. Plays movies, speech is heard. Any laptop manufacturer usually sighs with relief when it comes to built-in speakers - therefore, quality is not necessary. Want to retire to your favorite movie? Put on your headphones. Have a party? Connect the speakers. Like atrophied limbs, there have always been speakers in portable computers, but it’s not clear why.

At the same time, the main area of application of netbooks is closely related to the reproduction of sound information - without sound we can not imagine either Youtube or Skype, and indeed any entertainment application.
Asked about the nature of such a contradiction, Toshiba specialists conducted an online study asking the question: “If you have a netbook, or are you planning to buy it, in which cases would you use (use) a netbook without headphones?”

Toshiba online survey has been conducted in the countries of Great Britain, France, Italy since September 2010. The results looked like this:

As can be seen from the survey results - the vast majority of users (69.7%) use netbooks as a means to listen to music at home - and without additional audio accessories (speakers or headphones). In addition, as many as 40% of respondents actively use a netbook, entertaining guests at home. Only 3.8% did not perceive a netbook without headphones or speakers, that is, an absolute minority. In total, it turned out that, in fact, the dynamics in netbooks mean more than it seemed at first glance, and are even perceived as an independent means of reproducing sound.

To finally make sure of the arguments, the researchers in a separate issue invited users to directly assess how important the sound quality of the built-in speakers of the netbook is for them.

    The following results were obtained:

Here you can see that almost 40% of netbook lovers believe that the sound quality in the built-in speakers is a very important factor.

So, the quality of the built-in sound in netbooks is really needed by consumers.
    Then why not please them?

Of course, even the most advanced “tweeters” cannot replace a sophisticated audio system, if only because of their size and a number of other technical limitations associated with staying inside a netbook. So, having a noisy party, in any case you have to use a separate sound system. In most other situations, users themselves admitted that they would not run after the speakers again.

So, a small online study became an inspiration for creating a series of Toshiba Mini netbooks with harman / kardon audio system with support for Dolby Advanced Audio. We wrote about this product here .
