As Pocket-lint learned, Google will release a new version of its mobile operating system, Android 2.4, this summer.

According to several sources familiar with the issue, the release of Android 2.4 Ice Cream is scheduled for June / July this year. This is expected to be announced at the Google I / O conference in early May in San Francisco.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc smartphone, presumably running on a still unannounced mobile OS, was found in the showroom at CES.

Although Sony Ericsson said that a software error occurred in the device and it is actually not Android 2.4, our sources confirmed that the new OS is coming and will be released in the not too distant future.

Ice Cream (I) follows the versions Donut (D), Eclair (E), Froyo (F), Gingerbread (G) and Honeycomb (H).

Previously, Google announced that it would slow down the release of new versions of Android, focusing on two major updates a year. With Gingerbread introduced in December and Honeycomb in January, June is a good fit for Ice Cream.

Those who are good at math realized that this is already three in the last 6 months. However, many experts with whom we spoke at CES in Las Vegas believe that although Honeycomb is not officially considered a system for tablets, it most likely will not appear on mobile phones, but will stop on devices such as Motorola Xoom.
