Meet the new address bar, mouse gestures and updated mail with extensions

In anticipation of the beta release of Opera 11, we are pleased to present today two new features and several significant improvements, in particular when working with mail.

More secure address bar


New address barThe browser address bar is an extremely important feature. This is your key to navigating, searching and securing online. For Opera 11, we want to take the address bar to a new level, making it less visible and helping you focus on the most important tasks. To begin with, we note that the new address bar should protect most users who think they are on Google, while in fact they go to google.com.spoof.co, as well as for those users who cannot “parse »URL string without conscious effort. Technically savvy Opera users can, and can do it, but for everyone else, the contents of the address bar are a real semantic “garbage”. Although, on the server side, this can be solved differently, our solution is an attempt to highlight only the most important part in the link,

Features of the new Opera browser address bar

  • All web pages received an icon on the left side of the address bar. The icon replaces protocol names, such as HTTP, HTTPS, and opera:, which are now displayed only when the mouse cursor is placed in the address bar.
  • Clicking on the icon provides a quick overview of more comprehensive security information on the current web page.
  • Parameters at the end of addresses are visually hidden by default if the mouse cursor is not installed in the address bar. This option can be disabled by you yourself, by editing the parameter opera:config#UserPrefs|HideURLParameter.
  • And finally, there will also be an Opera Turbo mode indicator when it is turned on. Clicking on it will allow, for example, to obtain information about the estimated traffic savings for the current Opera Turbo session.

Visual mouse gestures


New mouse gesturesMany of you know and love the ability to control the browser, making small and quick gestures with your mouse. This feature, which is a true innovation of Opera, was first introduced in Opera 5.1.in April 2001. Ten years have passed and it's time to do a “facelift” for this function. Our goal was twofold. First of all, we need as many people as possible to learn about this extremely convenient function and use it. Secondly, we want users to learn how to use complex mouse gestures, and not just simple ones, such as forward and backward. To do this, we created a guide for mouse gestures, which can be caused by a long press of the right button of it. We warn those who have not yet used mouse gestures in Opera - before you open the guide, be aware that this is addictive!

Good built-in mail update


Built-in Mail UpdateThe mail development team has also prepared some interesting changes for you! We listened to your feedback and made one global scrollbar, instead of several previously used in the mail panel. The scrollbar keeps section titles at the very top, allowing you to quickly navigate through them.

We combined old filters, shortcuts and saved search results in a new, more advanced shortcut system. We have put together all the email search fields so that you can search where you want using the new toolbar that appears when using the search. If you wish, you can save the search result, as a rule, to automatically mark all new letters in accordance with it. You can select a custom icon for the shortcut in the settings menu of its properties, which will also undergo some changes in the near future.

In addition, we made some improvements to the download speed of the built-in mail, fixed problems with the themes of mail for Windows and Mac, made changes to the HTML-editor of letters and fixed some of the existing errors.

Extension Updates


Extension UpdatesOver the years, we have done a lot of work with extensions. Now they will work on secure sites (HTTPS) by default and we have added privacy settings where you can enable / disable extensions for working with a secure connection or in the mode of confidential browsing (disabled by default).

In addition to this, we added the option for extensions to have their own settings pages. You can access the extension settings and privacy pages in the extension manager.

You should also be aware of some changes in the requirements that will affect the currently available extensions:
  • Extensions should include a request for access to pages if you want to access them in the background process. You can do this by adding a parameter to the config.xml file.
  • Extensions must include the index.html file in the package or contain a parameter in the config.xml file
  • Extensions should use broadcastMessage () correctly - broadcastMessage () accepts only one argument (string or test object): this or broadcastMessage("hi")orbroadcastMessage({'say': 'hi' }
This means that authors of some extensions will have to update them.

Attention! This is a test build containing the latest changes, but also has a well-known list of problems, including crashes and data loss. Perhaps it will not work at all.

UPD . The first bug did not have to wait long - the right mouse button does not work if gestures are disabled. To fix this, check the opera option : config # UserPrefs | EnableGesture . Thanks to iSage and bobain for the way to solve the problem.
