DocMe - youtube for documents
I want to introduce you to our young, but interesting project - DocMe.ru , which is currently undergoing a public beta test. The service is intended for publishing documents of various text formats. I will not list foreign analogues, I am sure that the audience of the Habré has encountered them.
Instead of describing the possibilities that anyone will understand within the first minute of being on the site, I’d better tell you a few facts related to the project:
In our immediate plans:
I will be glad to answer any questions and suggestions in the comments.
Update: Unfortunately, the Habra effect was not in vain. New instances with converters do not have time to load under the pressure of thousand-page programming manuals. With all proletarian responsibility, I declare that usually the conversion time of an average document is up to one minute, unlike the current 20-30 minutes.
Instead of describing the possibilities that anyone will understand within the first minute of being on the site, I’d better tell you a few facts related to the project:
- The project is currently deployed on three servers. The frontend and backend are working on the first one, the converters are working on the second one (this is the Amazon instance, which is automatically duplicated to another instance when the load increases), and the third one is the document storage, which in turn is backed up on Amazon S3.
- The main modules of the project are written in java. The viewer is written in flash.
- Five people are working on the project: one flasher, two programmers, one system administrator, one manager and not a single designer.
- Supported formats at the moment: almost all office documents (ms + odf) + djvu + fb2 + chm + pdf (including protected).
- After a month of beta testing of the project, during which we almost did not do advertising, the results are as follows: ~ 500 visitors per day on the site and more than 2,000 per day of external views (in the built-in viewers), 50-80 uploaded documents every day and about a thousand registered users.
In our immediate plans:
- Infinitely improve the converters, which so far do not work perfectly.
- Screw to API system.
- Add “sociality” (comments, friends, bookmarks, etc.).
- Add some rare document formats.
- Add animation support in presentations.
- Implement a mechanism for selling documents through DocMe.ru.
- Solve the issue with devices that do not support Flash. Of course, primarily with apple products. Also, a viewer for js + svg + etc is being developed , which will allow people who do not have flash installed for one reason or another to use our project.
- Find finally a designer and redo everything. If you are a good designer who can cope with the development of modern web interfaces and you have time, write to us at job@docme.ru. Perhaps you can help us in this project.
I will be glad to answer any questions and suggestions in the comments.
