Review Acer Aspire 3820TG Notebook

Acer recently released new laptops to replace its Timeline series. All of them received new Core i3, i5, i7 processors (although for some reason i7 did not reach our market). And since only doubt in their performance separated me from buying a portable laptop, I decided it was time to buy. So, meet the hero of the review:

    Why 13 inches

Yes, many will say that 13 inches is not portable and uncomfortable to carry with you, well, maybe they are right. But I had the opportunity to use the 11-inch Aspire 1810TZ for some time, and its screen still seemed small to me, and given the resolution of 1366x768, the image caused slight discomfort. The last argument for the 13-inch version was that it has a discrete video card.

    Features of the name

Acer has two models with the full name Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG-5454G32iks. They differ in such a parameter as Part Number . The version with Part NumberLX.PV101.002 has a preinstalled Windows Home Basic and 6-cell battery, which promises to work 8 hours. The second option with Part NumberLX.PV102.188 already has Windows Home Premium and a 9-cell battery, promises to work 12 hours. In the second version, bluetooth is also declared, but it has not yet been found. But enough reason, let's move on to the laptop.

    Packaging and appearance

The box in which the laptop is delivered is compact enough and has a convenient carrying handle.
    image
Inside, you can find a 90-watt power adapter, mini instructions, a cleaning cloth and the laptop itself. Unfortunately, there is no case, but, apparently, this is because the model is not considered portable.

The laptop is quite thin, especially without a battery. Being inserted, it begins to serve as a stand - the laptop is at an angle. The cover is NOT glossy, made "for metal", but the prints on it still remain. Inside we will see a glossy screen, with a glossy edging, as well as a glossy edging of the keyboard ... apparently in compensation for the non-glossy cover. Under the keyboard is the same plastic "for metal", but it doesn’t get stuck at all, which is wonderful.

From the right side are: power connector, VGA, HDMI, 1 USB, microphone jacks and headphones.
    image

From the left side: 2 USB, RJ-45.
    image
On both sides, as well as in front are ventilation holes. True, the greatest air flow is felt on the left side.

In front, at the left corner is a slot for a memory card. Nearby are several indicators. From left to right: laptop operation indicator, charging indicator, wifi indicator. Yes, there is no separate lever for turning on wifi, only Fn + F3 hotkey.

Top-right, above the keyboard, there are several indicators: the work of the hard drive and locks, as well as the power button.

In this photo you can see that the glossy border of the keyboard is very fast.

On the left, above the keyboard, there is another button indicated by the letter “P”. It is programmed by the user for any (within reasonable limits) action.

The keyboard is somewhat similar to vaio-vskie. Has gaps between keys in 2 mm. Comfortable enough, without unexpected "innovations."

    CPU

The processor is equipped with TurboBoost technology , which means that it can be overclocked if necessary. In low power mode, it operates at a frequency of 1330 MHz:
    image

However, if necessary (if the "High performance" mode is enabled, then always) it accelerates to 2660 MHz:

Not very indicative, but the popular Super Pi test takes a laptop in 16 seconds (1 million characters):

    Graphics

The laptop has two graphics cards. Well, to be precise, the integrated video card is built into the processor, which means that such video cards will now be everywhere where iCore stands, but it's nice anyway. A discrete graphics card is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 , which has 1 GB of video memory, supports DirectX 11, and is a good gaming graphics card. More details can be found on the link in the table above. Switching between video cards occurs both automatically (by default, whenever the power cable is disconnected, the built-in card is turned on, when connected - discrete), and manually, using such a simple menu:

    HDD

A 320 gigabyte (actually 298 GB) drive from Western Digital is installed here . Initially, it is not divided into logical drives and 13 gigabytes is occupied by the recovery image. Of the 285 remaining 24, Windows is installed. Total user left 261 GB. Linear reading speed test:

    Battery

Of course, the laptop can work out the promised 12 hours ... but to achieve this figure, you just have to sit opposite it and look at the screen with minimal (better off) backlight. In reality, with wifi turned off, low backlighting, you can achieve 10 hours of work. BatteryEater's test was conducted in classic mode (maximum load). First with a discrete graphics card, then with a built-in. Wi-Fi was turned on, the backlight was at maximum.

    Intel GMA HD

As you can see, at full load there is almost no difference. But this condition will only happen if you play something very demanding (Metro 2033, for example). So for less than 3 hours the laptop will not work.

    Software

The laptop has Windows Home Premium 64-bit installed. Which is right, because the kit comes with 4 GB of RAM. Among the heap of pre-installed software there is nothing interesting: toys, trial McAfee antivirus, no less trial 2010 office and other garbage, which is usually recorded on laptops. Wallpaper continues to advertise the laptop, hopefully hoping to attract those who will peek from behind.

Windows itself rated the laptop like that:

But this is an estimate for a discrete video card; every time you switch windows, it tries to re-evaluate it.

    Summary

This laptop can be called universal. On the one hand, it is not so big in size, it fits into a briefcase or bag, and there is still space left. Yes, and it weighs 1.8 kg, which allows you to carry it with you for a long time. At the same time, he already has an adult video card, a powerful processor and a capacious battery that will allow him to work all day.

Perhaps this is an ideal laptop, for a person who, firstly, is not enough on the road that offer portable 9-11 inch laptops and secondly do not want to have two different laptops (laptop and computer) in order to use at home / on the road .

In conclusion, before briefly describing the pros and cons, I want to say that people, of course, are all different, each with their own requirements for a laptop. This one suits me, it can both play FullHD (tried to watch BD-Remux, 35 Mbps), run modern games without brakes, and live for about 10 hours with a light load. A laptop for those seeking versatility.

    Advantages and disadvantages
