To create a multi-regional information portal, we created a structure that is divided by city, each user must choose their own city during registration. But I would like to automate this process. But how to do that? Use one of the available IP geolocation mapping services? But they are all inaccurate or incomplete!
Most Russian IP determination services are either inaccurate, incomplete, or not updated, or simply do not provide details to the city. Western services in principle are not convenient for Russia, because most regional subnets are automatically listed as Moscow or only Russia.
Paid services could not be tested. But having determined the range of possible problems that similar services encounter, it can be assumed that even databases that are accurate for Russia and the regions may neglect the quality and accuracy of information for other countries important to us - Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.
The solution was to create our own services for collecting IP-addresses and manual moderation-binding to the cities of the world. Automation is used so far only for:
- collection of IP addresses;
- interrogation of the international whois-base and storage of request data in the database for analysis;
- verification of ranges of IP addresses and a system for processing overlapping or disputed ranges;
- definition of the country.
In the near future, we will add statistical information on the ranges of IP addresses collected and linked to cities. Currently, priority countries are being processed and an interface is being developed for faster analysis.
PS Automated methods for determining cities by definition are inaccurate, because there are such descriptions that will automatically be assigned to a false region. Administrators sometimes leave such pearls in the description of ranges ...
PPS By the way, IP ranges can also be attached to the database of companies on the CREW portal, which will allow to greet company employees more individually.
