Chronicle of a diving habrasila, rating script, attention vampirism and the 25th judgment day

The story is devoted to the study of the function of user ratings in one social network. How does the rating (habrasila) behave on Habré? There is no detailed description of this process in the search results, therefore the discovery is supposed to be called the “law of the 25th Judgment Day”. It is after this period of time, on the 26th day after the last publication, that the rating begins to fall catastrophically, striving for a numerical indicator of karma.

The publication is intended for users interested in the natural sciences. annotation: as a result of a fundamental difference in the average increase in the rating and karma indicators during publications over 25 days, the rating experiences a slight attraction to the level of karma, which then demonstrates a collapse, a certain period of catastrophic decline, and only after 29 days the law begins to look like inversely proportional , natural for linear attraction processes according to the law 1 / x. The user’s desire to maintain the rating at a distance from the value of karma forces him to constantly work on publications, attracting attention (vampirism of attention), which is energetically beneficial to produce more than once every 25 days.

Once upon a time, when the earth was small, and users lived in caves, no one knew who ran the rating. Now we know that this script doesbut did not know how he does it. The study, which anyone can repeat using Karmagraf (a script that tracks karma and rating through the Habr API ) or manually, sheds light on the nature of the phenomenon.

For the studied data, we will choose the movement of my rating within a month after the last publication (April 1). Until that time, publications were quite frequent - ideal conditions to compare the behavior of “before” and “after”. The balance of pluses for publications (easy to calculate in the history of the blog) amounted to 253 (including 134 minuses). Karma at that time was about 65, i.e. pluses to the rating was 4 times more. There was also a positive balance of pluses for the comments, which can also be counted by going over the history of your comments, but we won’t do this, this is not the point. For 1.5 months, the final rating was about 185, which is 3 times more karma. Obviously, this is a consequence of the very law of attraction of rating to karma, which was once given to the public, and it acted against the background of frequent publications, decreasing moderately,

Another interesting observation: formally, I could be in the ranking of the first hundred visitors, because among the 60s - 90s there are many people with a lower ratio of numbers (for example, 32-92, 70-70, 64-58), but the page of the "personal card" showed that the script considered me 130th - 140th. That is, the rating of people in the table is considered different from that of the user rating in individual data. It is apparently something more averaged over time (almost all visitors from the table are more than a year on the site). (Or, these are specially chosen people.)

The ratio of "date - rating" and its movement over time

But back to the rating. (Over time, I did not record data and did not use a karmameter, so the data is written from memory, but it accurately reflects my behavior.)

    Date 1.04 - 04/05/2010 - rating 188 - 185 (approximately 130th in the rating of hara-people).

In the subsequent period of time, the rating slowly decreased by 1-3 points per day; increased by 0.3-0.4 with each plus of the comment. The amazing thing happened in one day, more precisely, in one night. The rating has a gap. Most likely, after 25 days after the last publication, it fell by about 40-45 units once. (No other active actions took place, therefore the reason is seen in the 25th day.) At the same time, the general rating begins to fall.

April 25 - 166 (approximately the 150th in the habrahuman rating)
    April 26 - 121 (a collapse ) April 27
    - 110
    28.04 - 99 (a peak of 10 per day)
April 29 - 90 (the 630th in the habrahuman rating - the position, of course, is not inversely proportional to the rating )
April 30 - 85 (gradual exit from the tailspin, 5 per day)
    1.05 - 80
    3.05 - 77 (even smoother descent)

For clarity, the graph is presented in Excel:
It is easy to distinguish several significant sections of the rating behavior:
    * Plateau - “melting charm”,
    * Collapse - “loss of confidence”,
    * Smooth decline after the shock.

The formula "1 / x" is called very conditionally - the data do not allow us to talk about the exact formula of the law. Maybe 1 / x ** 2 or something else else. But it is clear that the attraction is not linear.

    Vampirism of people's attention

If you get a rating higher than karma, you become a “vampire of attention”. Now, to keep the rating in such an unnatural ratio, you need to regularly eat the attention of readers. At the same time, the advantages for comments will help a little and will be able to weakly hold the falling rating for a short time (up to 25 days). Then a function of clearly non-natural origin begins to work - with chopped landslides and slopes. Perhaps after the next series of publications you can again return to vampirism (attention).

Of course, there is the opposite case when it is not the rating that makes the visitor publish, but publication makes the rating grow. The causal relationship between these phenomena is still poorly understood, as well as the reasons that prompt the user to publish something.

(They are derived from the behavior of the script Habra at the time of observation; it may change Probably the script is still working according to the rules set out briefly here in the future ". The translation habrasily and rankings (26.11.2008).")

If you want to hold the highest position in the rating - do not interrupt publications for a period longer than 25 days - the nourishing script will disappoint you. The publications should probably be interesting so that the collapse does not happen, but I have no data about this. In any case, uninteresting articles will not help either people or rating. And also (by reference to the source), "For posts in non-core blogs, the author will not be able to build up habrasil. Moreover, if the author does not fast for a long time, his habrasil will gradually come closer to the meaning of karma. The very same habrasil is calculated based on the votes for the topics and comments of the author. Moreover, given the complexity of the publication. "( Shoohurt ).

The integrated rating of habra-people works according to more time-averaged laws than the personal rating (called habrasila). It is by the integrated rating that you can see the entire depth of the script’s disappointment in you after day 25. If the personal rating fell 1.8 times, then the position among other users is at 4 (due to the exponential law of the distribution of favorites).
