April Fools PS3 firmware update will disable Linux installation

Sony officially announced in its American and European blogs that the new firmware version 3.21, which will be released on April 1, 2010, will remove the “Install Other OS” function, which is currently available on all PS3 consoles except PS3 Slim, from the list of PS3 features . This feature in particular allows you to install on a Linux console and use it like a regular PC.

Of course, updating the firmware of your console is not necessary, but then many functions will become unavailable, such as the ability to access the PlayStation Network, play on the network, play new BDs and play games that will require a new firmware version, as well as use all new ones features that will be added to the PS3 after this firmware (and this, in particular, the stereo mode in games and Blu-Ray 3D, the beginning of support of which is scheduled for this summer).

Most likely this is due to the fact that earlier this year, hacker George Hotz, also known as GeoHot, said he had full access to the memory and the processor of the console. Sony just decided to play it safe and remove this loophole for a possible hacking of the console.
