News from UPC regarding what happened to Torrents.ru

    The investigating authorities of the Investigative Committee at the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation for the city of Moscow are investigating a criminal case instituted on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Article 146 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal use of copyright objects committed on a large scale).

    According to the investigation, on January 26, 2010, a resident of the city of Moscow for a monetary reward in the amount of 1,5 thousand rubles wrote to the computer hard drive the counterfeit program “Autodesk AutoCAD” the Russian version, the copyrights of which belong to Autodesk, worth more than 106 thousand rubles.



    During the investigation of the case, it was found that through the website with the domain name “torrents.ru”, malware and counterfeit copies of works were repeatedly distributed, which entailed a violation of the copyright of Autodesk AutoCAD, CJSC 1C and other legal copyright holders in large and especially large sizes.

    In the case, investigative and operational measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime, including those that contributed to the commission of this crime, were carried out.

    In order to take measures to eliminate the circumstances that contribute to the commission of a crime, prevent the commission of such crimes, establish participation in the commission of these crimes, the owners of a domain name, in accordance with Part 2 of Art. 158 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation, the investigating authorities have submitted a proposal to suspend the delegation of the torrents.ru domain name for the duration of the preliminary investigation.

    The criminal investigation is ongoing.
